Trying to get the Over center clutch spring and pedal in now that it is all in the car. I hooked up the clutch pedal and adjusted every thing. Got in the car and OH NO. The pedal is really tough to disengage the clutch. So figured to put the over center spring back in. Has any one got any advice on how to get the Pedal to line up with the bolt hole with the spring on it now. Tried several Ideas but not having much luck. So open for suggestion's on how to get it back together. Blue.

normally the pedal is installed then on goes the spring which is tough! I’ve always removed the spring by pushing the pedal down and stack 1/2” bolt flat washers between the coils to lengthen the spring and leave them in until it’s time to reinstall. if you have a means to stretch the springs and use shims that would be the best way to reinstall the spring.

Now that is an idea I did not think off. Beekeeper. Can you get the washers out again. That thing is really up in the cage. Will give it a shot. If I where young again might just could mussel it in. LOL.

have it in backwards ??

Well justjim. Yes I did put it in wrong the first time but now have it right. But still not enough room to center the pedal with the bolt hole. Keep knocking the needle bearing's out. It don't need much to center up in their. I was appose to them we use to say they wore out the through out bearing. Plus the pedal like to have taken my finger off when taking the car apart. Thought I was strong enough to push the heavy duty clutch in that I put in the car. Not so young any more and Knee trouble dose not help. Thanks for asking. Blue

Install the pedal first.

I just use a big screwdriver to lever the spring onto the lug on the pedal.

not really related to topic

but having installed a new A833, shifter, rods, clutch...
my pedal goes to the floor and stays there.
Brewer told me to remove the over center spring because they say it is not needed because my pressure plate has more than the stock 3 fingers. Forget how many how many it has but looks just like the standard set-up. Walked away to work on something else but need to get to the bottom of this issue. Maybe not done adjusting.

Hook the spring on a trolley jack. One loop on the wheel x shaft the other on the lifting pad... jack and stretch spring... stuff it full of washers and install the spring. Stomp on pedal and the washers fall out.

I use the cherry picker to stretch springs to paint.

I've used the washer trick a couple times, it works good. Are you running a Borg and Beck clutch or a diaphragm style? I'm sure you know that the spring can't be used with a diaphragm.

I tried to do that but no success. Guess I don't have the strength I use to have. LOL. Or that their is not enough room under their.

Just get a measurement of how much extension you need to just barely get the spring on
and follow Wayne’s advice. stretch the spring with a floor Jack and stick the washers in install the spring
then mash the clutch and pickup all the washers in the floorboard.

Yes when cleaning the pedal assemble thought I had ordered the fin type clutch. But of course coming from the old back ground of heavy clutch Plates and all did order the heavy styled pressure plate. The fin style would chatter and burn the clutch plate. In some cars we use to race so stuck with what we called the dog bone pressure plate.

That sound's like a lot better idea Beekeeper. Picking up the washers will be easy. Boy after fighting for two day's with this thing will get it done in half the time. When the rod came through the brake pedal and the other side not much room. so had some solid #14 copper wire and held the nut in place with it till got it started then was able to put the wrench on it and tighten it all the way up. Will give you guys a head's up will try and get it in tomorrow. Thanks to all for the info.

Yes dadsbee. This will make short work of this and save my back. That front seat in is killer even though it is a bucket seat car.

I just loosen the pedal assy. on the firewall and this allows the pedal to travel that extra 1/2" to easily install or remove the spring. Easy peezy.

Did not know how much I would have to take apart to do that which had given it a lot of thought. Skinned up enough paint and will have to repaint a lot under their. Appreciate it. Next time I do a stupid thing like saying I don't need a girlie spring will think twice. LOL.

I forgot to mention the pedal needs to be all the way down.
So I have the clutch linkage unattached from the pedal when I’m doing it.

Another way to get the washers or nickels in between the spring coils is to put on side of the spring in a vice and bend it to one side where the coils seperate and then do the other the opposite way. You may have to grab the top of the spring with a prybar or something. Then install. When the clutch is released the washers or nickels will fall out (most of the time)
