Question. Are the (inside to inside) rear frame dimensions the same on a 71/72 vs a 73/74 at the point just before it bends up over the axel? I measured approx. 36" on my 73 Satty. I need to know for fitting something that says no according to the book. I believe that they should be but maybe not.

Is it a rear sway bar?

I believe they are.

...all the way to 79.

I have a 71 I can measure but it might be a while.

I'm pretty sure you can swap the whole rear axle and spring assembly.

Not technically involving those frame rails, but the forward shackle mounts.

rear frame rails are the same on all 71/74 2 doors B bodies. Differences could be on some hole provisions according with year options changes, but rails are the same shape and lenght

Here are each year of the rear frames.

Yessir, you guessed it! Thank you all for responding. I want to install a Hellwig rear sway bar that clamps around the rear housing & runs underneath the pumpkin and bolts to adjustable holes in the flattened tubing that is tied to rods that connect to through bolts that you have to drill through the rear frame on each side. My car has offset spring hangers and the leaf springs are in line with the frame rails. The sway bar ends are inside the frame and it looks to me that there shouldn't be any interference with anything. Of course, because the 73 & 74 cars came with a different rear spring setup with the rubber isolation blocks as well as the front k-frame, the aftermarket nixes things that will work as they don't always know. My car was changed out to the old solid style of u-bolts and shock mounts. That being said, when searching the web, Hellwig makes the bar I want for the 71 & 72 but says it won't fit the 73 & 74.
I thank (65 satellite) for the idea and photos that I "borrowed!"

I'm pretty sure my car has factory holes for sway bar mounts in the frame rails.

However, the captive bolts don't look fun to put in or take out.

It appears that I have those (small) holes there as well. I actually went to a small Mopar bone yard over 10 years ago and bought the front & rear factory sway bars. Installed the front but found out that the rear would not fit due to the rear spring relocation inward for drag racing tire clearance. I gave the rear bar to another member here who lived about 20 miles away for his project. Unfortunately the member moved away and is no longer active on this site. Also the former owner of the small Mopar yard passed away some time ago and it closed up. When ever I get the chance to do this, I will also change out my 3.91 gear set for 3.23s. Again, thank you all for your input.

72 and lates get the holes for the sway bar brackets, 71s not. Rear sway bar didn't exist for 71s

74s get square holes for the bumper guard bottom braces fasteners ( U nuts ). 71/73 gets an extra bracket for that.

Those are two diff between rear frame rails I'm sure. Maybe there are more and moparmarks will know better than me.

Thanks Nacho, I appreciate your help. All I need now is money, time & a lift, Lol!

Actually Nacho 71's did have the dimples for the sway bar holes as 71 cop cars had the rear sway bar. Passenger car did not have a sway bar. All of my 71 frames have the dimples.

That Hellwig looks like a pretty stout piece!
I put an Adco on my 71' only because it was free & new. I have a 73 rail on my passenger side. Drilled 4 holes & it's in.

I looked at the Adco & noted it seemed the only aftermarket rear bar listed, at least on Summit. I called them to ask the actual width on a couple bars I thought might fit but they didn't have any info on that. They told me to call Hellwig for that & I did. The guy who's project I saw the bar from in post #5 above actually said he got a Summit branded one for about a hundred dollars less. I tried to cross reference a Summit bar the same way but they don't make a knock off of the Hellwig, at least not in the proportion I need.

I just installed the Hellwig bar on my 71 last weekend. Nice piece. SD truck springs has the best price that I have found.
Thank you for the link. That is a better price! But does it include shipping??
Post some pics if you took any.

Free Shipping. See the link in my sig. last page. I can take for you more if you like.

I did click that but didn't see the big "free shipping" posted right there. On second look it could have bit my nose off for crying out loud! Between getting old & working the midnight shift, I ain't worth a crap, Lol!
:thankyou:

I meant the link in my signature for my 71 build for the pics of my install.

Thanks for redirecting me. I missed that one too. I don't ever remember seeing a build thread link at the bottom of someone's post like that. Once again, too soon olt und too late shmart! Wow, you are doing a great job on your 71 Charger. I did however poke your avatar looking for a photo garage, but not having found one , decided to punt on first down. Thanks again!
