.22 LR (long rifle/long range)

Man, I had an old Ruger .22 rifle that shot LR bullets. It did not have a scope, but I could hit about anything at any distance with that rifle ! It now resides at the bottom of Lake Erie (bad day).

22 LR have always been very accurate, fun to shoot and cheap! Great trigger squeeze rounds. I am surprised to see the plywood damage for basic round at those distances! Obviously, not great for precision at those distances due to the weight and subject to even slight weather. I think I’d want just a little tighter group. Still pretty cool to get on the board.

Trajectory has to look like a rainbow. Fun, but pointless. Without special optics, you couldn't hit anything at these ranges.

Tragic boating accident?

This. I mean, 22LR wasn't ever meant to be a "sniper" round - it's for small game and honestly, for plinking.
It's a very "dirty" round and not manufactured to gnats' *** tight tolerances - and of course, there's the
FTF/FTE issues associated with it.
It's meant to be cheap, so you get that.
It's also fun to burn through a few hundred rounds at a time - and some of us went sort of nuts hoarding them
back when things got stupid (I went "semi-nuts", only have a few thousand).
I only buy jacketed hollow point because I hate cleaning the damn rifle so much afterwards.

I have a ruger 10-22 rifle.
And a Baretta Neos pistol.

Like .mentioned its not a long range round typically.

But fun to take to the rsnge and see what you can do

A .22 rifle and a 12 gauge shotgun are what most gun collections start from.

My 10-22 is only good to about 25 yards before the arc gets difficult to manage.

By far the best round for velocity and distance is CCI mini-mag.

If anyone's shot a better round through that rifle, I'd love to hear about it.

I have a lot of .22's, several that are quite expensive. In that video they are using the V22 which costs about $3K and the TACOMHQ Charlie which is a prismatic sight (thing in front of the optic) that by the use of mirrors allows the rifle to elevate enough to hit very distant targets (extreme long range shooters use them to shoot out to and past 2000 meters).

I love .22's as well as some of the .17's and .22 caliber PCP air rifles as they all provide an exceptional amount of fun at a relatively low cost. That said I have gone a bit overboard and recently bought a $1500 PCP air rifle... it is badass though. I really like the Ruger Precision Rim Fire rifles (along with some of their centerfire counterparts) and have one in .22LR and one in .17HMR. They are awesome and fun to shoot especially suppressed. I have a couple of 10-22's which are a blast to shoot and usually work flawlessly.

On a windy day at the ranch (and at a pretty long range, maybe 100 yards) I was "plinking" at a ground squirrel one day. The wind was in such a direction that the report of the rounds going off were not reaching the little critter, which kept him/her from hearing my shootings and jumping back in his hole. After about 98 rounds, I finally heard a faint "thwap" sound and the squirrel was no longer running around.

Walked up the hill to find a dead squirrel. The wind was such that my point of aim had to be way off target. This was using Grandfather's octagon barrel Remington pump action .22 rifle.

I have no respect for Eric, and even less credit on anything! A .22 is pretty much worthless at hitting, let alone killing anything beyond 100 yards!

I think more specifically we're talking about the 22LR, but for example 22-250 and other .22's center-fire cartiges are the same diameter and bullet weight packed with more powder which are very good long range.

But that's a totally different discussion than what being discussed here, now isn't it??????

Interesting subject.... let me go on record as not wanting to be shot with a
22LR at 100 yards. :D
I really enjoy target and can plinking with them.
Dibbons posted about shooting his grandpa's rifle. I have my grandmas.22 also, a winchester single shot .22lr. From the late 30s.
She kept it in the kitchen next to the door.

When my son was 10 I bought him a 10 22...first day in the woods he was getting mad...its broken, I can't hit anything. I took it from him and nailed a bird from about 40 yards. Fast forward 10 years....he is an amazing shot now, and knows what rounds work for him and what dont.

Shooting a $0.10 cents to $0.25 cent rounds with $2500 gun & optics (?)
not a great round

decent distance, anything over 600 yards 1100+fps

I loved my old Ruger 10/22 I got when I was 10-ish
not good for anywhere near 1/2 that distance

Only 22LR pieces I have are my Heritage Rough Rider, and my AR 22 conversion pieces so I mostly just go for plinkin. The Rough Rider also has an extra wheel for 22 WRM that I shoot more of as it carries as a good side arm for snakes and such. Funny but an assassins or hit mans preferred round was a 22LR as it would would scramble the brains immediately on a back of the head shot...cr8crshr/Bill:usflag::usflag::usflag:

I thought this is a cool deal use the same gun & frame
plink with cheap .22 rimfires, for shits & giggles
it's from Kimber for a 1911 $350-ish

Gun Kimber 1911 .22ca Rimfire conversion $350.jpg

I love the "25 yard" comment.
22LR is a good one to plink at about 50-75 yards; I like working on mine at about 100 yds since it has
a rinky-dink little scope on it (it's a Remington 597) and yes, Mini-Mags have been my favorite for decades
now.
That said....if cost is no object and I want to zing some downrange a bit harder, Stingers will get the job done
nicely. Try a pack!
