Where do the kids go looking for military surplus? Do you remember? They were all over the place way back when. I can remember wearing a .30caliber magazine storage belt when 10 or so in the late 50's. The smell of those stores was just awesome(rotting(?) canvas). The old tents, etc.Cosmoline grease permeating everything.

sadly you're 100% correct

Afghanistan would be the #1 place to look today.

Well,
I guess it depends on where you live....
I just typed in on BING: Military Surplus stores in Ohio and came of with a few
1. Deerfield, OH
2. Columbus, OH (Further away from you)
3. Kettering OH, near Dayton...where I was stationed for 12 years (WPAFB)
4. GALCO Army store Cleveland.
5. Cousins Army/Navy in Columbus

I am a big fan of Army & Navy stores, My dad took me there for everything, from Jeans to boots. Great supplies of Military surplus gear & tools...
One of the places is still in business

As a teen got all my winter jackets at the Army/Navy store.
Full length Air Force blue.Heavyweight, $10.

There's several surplus stores in our region, but "deals" in them have proven tough to come by in
recent years - mostly due to the onset of the whole "prepper" movement.
All the wannabe Redneck Rambos out there keep the demand up on stuff, you know.

Can you still find 100% wool blankets?

I found my work bench blanket at the Army Surplus store in Trenton, Tennessee about 16 miles away. It's served me well now for over 15 years with two minor infractions: I cut through it with a razor blade once, and a shop kitty left PlastiDip paw prints on it while I was finishing a set of Commando wire tabs and left the lid laying on the bench. Oooooops.

Just looked up from my work to see this.
Plastic Dip Lid vs. Shop Cat ... the current score is 4-0.

I suppose that one paw pad will now be quieter and better insulated from electrical shock.

I know of a couple stores; but sadly...as posted there's a ton of military 'surplus' scattered about now in Afghanistan; but advise not buying a plane ticket to go shopping there. Oops - this is in the GD forum. My apologies.

That is pretty accurate. We have one store left in the area (been around for 75 years)and it is pretty cool to go walk around, they have surplus, camping gear and work clothes. It is everything a surplus store should but you will find out the prices are crazy high though.

Wasn't "I GOLDBERG" origanally a ARMY/NAVY surplus store?? We had RAUL's Army/Navy in Berlin NJ, and Polsky's in Woodbury NJ, both GONE WITH THE TIMES!!!:( Store in Berlin Farmers Market not same as old stores.

Used to wear my dad's Korean War carrier deck jacket( B-2?) to high school. Had to leave it unzipped unless it was below 10*-F. You'd sweat to death.

Being close to an USAF base, there are three good mil surplus stores close by. I lost my winter weight flight jacket years ago...might go looking for a replacement soon. It was a very comfy jacket to wear and work in. My older son has my leather flight jacket these days, and it fits him well. It has the Gulf War I "chit" sewn inside the back of the jacket, too.
