Can you change the sending unit in a 64 Fury’s fuel tank without pulling the tank, at present there is no rear end housing in the car.

Can anyone recommend a quality replacement?

Hmm,
Darter 6 says yes
On mine, there seems to be enough room but I always "drop the tank"
Affords great time to :
Replace bad lines
Install new Tank Clamps etc

But cool to know
I just always have bad luck, something breaks etc

I presently have the rear end housing out to replace it so I have a lot of room due to car being up on stands. I can get at the sending unit pretty easily, any suggestions as to what to look for as far as a brand?

I've had bad luck with ones bought from Year One.
The last few I bought thru Summit.Worked well.

Yes, it is not too hard to do under the car. However, I currently have the tank out of my 64 Fury, and am replacing everything including the tank. The pic shows how crudded up stuff was in my original sender...

I bought a Spectra FG129A unit from Rockauto. It is shaped different at the pickup tube, and the float swing arm is much shorter than the original unit. So, I am hoping the gauge will work properly, but not confident yet. I ran into a problem with the new filler tube grommet, and finally received a different on this week. But have not had time to replace it yet, so no tank in car yet...

It doesn't take much to drop the tank. You'll be able to see what you're doing and give the seat a good inspection. When you lock the ring things tend to move around a bit and could move the gasket. Also gives you a chance to clean and paint where the tank sits.

I bought a Quanta aka Spectra. Works great four years now.

Hard to believe your tank was useable given the condition of that sending unit.
Wow that was hammered.

I got my sending unit from Vans since they had the larger 1/2” unit. They have the stock 3/8” also.

I installed my sending unit today and found the reason for not working was a float full of gas. I removed the float and shook it and you could hear the gas sloshing around inside it as well as leaking through a pin hole l, the mesh of the sock was also missing. I feel the tank and sending unit had been changed at some point, the tank is in very nice shape and other than the quoted issues so was the sending unit. I did not have to drop the tank to change the sending unit and the job took about 20 minutes.
