Who has MOVED from their home state ? How difficult was it for you?

Welcome to the real world! My local range "knows me" (I do all my CCW certs there) so I pretty much get a lane whenever I get some free time. Special events, depending who's hosting (IPSC drill days, for example) they'll get me for admission fees just to pay the host group...but they usually "find" me a box of ammo to make up for it.

Congrats for escaping The Petrochemical State!

So Dawg, it been almost 3 years now since you started this, and where you at with it? The reason I ask is if I remember right, you recently wanted to buy a trailer to tow more junk home.
Are you plan on moving yourself or contract that out? Have you seriously looked into how much it's going to cost you to move all your ****, I mean stuff? I'm not talking a moving company because they are going to be lots more than a DIY!

I've been a homeless Veterans for over 7 years now and have downloaded most of my life's possession's in that time, my 2 most major possessions are my 66-300 and a 69 A100, you want to talk about sticker shock to have someone move those, HOLY **** it is expensive!!!! almost twice what I thought it'd be! And I haven't even touched on how much the truck and a tow dolly is for the rest of my ****!
I'm still stuck in the revolving door as they [U-Haul] can't guarantee me a truck during the week I'm supposed to boogie outta here which is in 2 weeks!
So, you want to keep buying **** that you'll eventually either junk it or keep it all and drive yourself to the poor house trying to move all that crap! Don't come cryin about how expensive it is because everyone's moving out of CA. and you will get stabbed with that extra premium for living there, remember supply & demand? Just sayin

I didnt tell you the whole story yet. It got messy (think PITA mixed with deceit, sprinkled with passive aggressiveness) with the seller, so when the contract expired, we didnt extend the closing date. Things fell into place and we found a rental listed hours earlier right up the road in Gunterville. I have no problem renting for a year while the real estate market "readjusts" itself. 3 acres would have been nice, we will explore that possibility then. I was looking forward to a few goats and chickens.

We are in agreement about what we want. We like green grass, rolling hills, lots of trees and maybe even water on the land either in the form of small streams or a pond.
The weather needs to be reasonably similar to Sacramento CA. No heavy snow, no high humidity and no 120 degree Summers. We would prefer property with at least 10 acres. The Wife looked at Zillow listings and found all sorts of properties in Tennessee that seem to meet the criteria. The state sales tax is actually higher there than in CA! What??? a 7% state tax with an average 2.45 local tax for a 9.45 % average! Here where I am it is 7.75%. The property taxes are lower though. I'd imagine gas prices are too.
I do recall members here that were once California residents that moved away. I have heard of several people that relocated to Idaho. What do you know about that state? I love the spirit of Texas but if it looks as flat and barren as most of Nevada or Arizona, I'll politely decline.
To those that did move, was it difficult to adjust? Did you have any regrets? I've lived here since I was 2 years old so this is not an easy thing to decide. The Wife left family in Arizona to move here. Moving again would not be as difficult for her.

I have a constantly revolving inventory of stuff. I give stuff away almost as much as I sell things because nowadays, even the mundane stuff like slant six parts and 318 exhaust manifolds are not so easily found in junkyards.
I have a plan for the move, when it happens.
I'll either buy or rent shipping containers and load them up myself. I'll rent a dumpster and toss almost all the furniture in it and buy all new stuff at the new place. I'll keep clothes, keepsakes, DVDs, tapes, magazines and such.
The cars will require a multi-car hauler. It will cost money but so what? I see the "move" as a necessary cost of it all.
I do get a little nervous thinking about what a big change it will be. I have become more cautious with age but I don't want to be that way. Taking risks often results in some great new experiences.
 
Hey KD, have you considered renting out your place in California and renting a place to live in a different state? That way you can try it out, before you fully commit to a permanent move.

"Ranges"? 'Round here, we call 'em "the side yard". :)
We've just got the 10 acres here, but with one hell of a backstop -namely, the side of a ridge on
Clinch Mountain. The "range" is the most convenient to me imaginable - as in "step outside".
Come to think of it, if I was really "from around here", I reckon I could just open a window instead I
suppose... :lol:
I've got distances wheeled/measured up to 300 yards. No idea why - can't see that far anyways. :)
Thousands of natural target holders, too (trees). We welded up a steel target rack a few years ago to
hang the hardened stuff from for the rifles, but pretty much targets are whatever you feel like shootin' at.

YES, "natives" in the South DO know, almost instinctually, that "you ain't from around here" and some will
even use that exact phrasing when chatting with you.
I still hear it over 25 years later because I don't have the native drawl.

- just not this particular one. :)

Biggest mistake some make when moving down here is thinking they're gonna improve the place....
