My 72 satellite stock 318 randomly pukes coolant mainly when shut off. It has a newer water pump (previous owner). I've replaced thermostat and cap. Temp remains roughly 1/3 on gage when cruising. Creeps to 1/2 at idle. I've flushed the system. Thought I over filled it so let it puke out the would drive it all over for 1wk with no issue. Pull into a car show and it pukes. I thinking of trying a new radiator (recommendations welcome). But don't want to spend the money if its may something else like headgasket or cracked head. Oil is always clean no evidence of coolant in it. I've dealt with diesels puking coolant but not gassers. Thanks in advance.

I would only use nos or glen ray @ restorationradiators.com
Recently installed one from glen ray. Great product and exceptional service. (When i say exceptional i mean it, especially considering todays world)

I would run a coolant recovery system. Pick up any recovery bottle that fits and looks good and a Stant 10231 cap

I made me own overflow tank and still have some issues. Tank will be bone dry after it pukes

You state that it reads approximately 1/3 on temp gauge. If that is correct, then radiator, pump and thermostat appear to be working correctly. I would have the cap pressure tested at a local parts store. Recommend 16psi cap. Fill the radiator to 1" below bottom of radiator fill neck and with "known" good cap, drive it n let it puke a little, if it pukes at all, then it should be good. Also verify engine temp w cheap laser heat gun.

Does the tube that connects to your radiator go to the bottom of the tank? Is the tank vented? If there is no coolant in the tank, where is it escaping? How much capacity is there in your tank?

What's the capacity of the overflow tank?

I tried a 32 oz tank but it was too small.

Now I have a 48 oz tank it the frequency of overflowing has greatly been reduced.
Not gone completely but 95% reduction.
It really only happens after a long cruise with the AC on.

The tube from the radiator (neck) should go almost all the way to the bottom of the overflow tank.

Try the simple things first, test with new cap, then check if thermostat is working. When it opens have you looked in the radiator to see if coolant is flowing ? You said it has a newer water pump, has it always had this issue or something recent ?

Try a new radiator cap first or swap it with another vehicle's cap. I had a the same problem . And also had a defective new cap.
