Who has MOVED from their home state ? How difficult was it for you?

My wife got a quote from Pods, $12k to go to Texas for 2 pods. U-Haul is $6k for a 24ft truck and car dolly. The U-Haul and car dolly is what we will end up doing as Pods is a 2 month wait! The bright side to all this is, I get to buy a an enclosed car trailer and I’m looking a couple of 24-28ft for around $12-18k. I can sell the trailer when we get settled in Texas.

Oh, U-Haul was more than 1/2 LESS going from Texas to Commiefornia!

.
I have done that except I did with a big stock trailer (used)!!!

We’ve been here in Prescott Valley AZ
For a year now. We are very happy , it’s not perfect out here, but what place is ?
Where did you move from??
We lived just west of Chicago . Villa park
Heck....You went from snow in the winter, humidity in the summer to dry heat.
You went from impossibly high taxes to reasonable tax rates.
No wonder you are happy. GOOD for you!

A friend told me one time, if there was a perfect place to live, they'd make sure you couldn't afford to live there. California use to be that place, get my point. Missouri, the show me state!!!

Has @Kern Dog narrowed down the field of potential places to live?

The way citizens of a state vote has consequences........ When you move out of that state, than vote the same way that ruined the state you came from what do you think will happen??

The Local news here in central Florida, recently had people filming in parking lots and asking the new transplants if they were going to vote for Governor DeSantis ( Florida's Governor) and most said NO, they did not like him and were going to vote against him..... And you wonder why nobody wants any transplants in their state??

Yeah - That would no doubt be hard to swallow - but also keep in mind you’re listening to the fake news media. Doesn't matter if local news or cable news they all get their marching orders from the same POS fake news leadership. So at the very least take anything you hear from written or video news with a huge lump of **** to go along with it. I have a number of friends in FL and they tell me where FL has historically been one way - is now for the first time in eons gone #’s wise completely the other way. And for those of us of like mind that’s a very good thing. Screw the media and the bs narrative they would have you swallow.

Tell them to leave. They left their state cause of the way it is and now want to vote the way that turned their state to ****! No way!

We are back from our annual Christmas visit to see the wife's family in Arizona.
Awhile back, we talked about the possibility of moving there as a stepping stone to somewhere else. The idea was and is that we just want to leave this poorly governed state but haven't mustered the guts to do it yet. Arizona would allow us to still be reasonably close to family here in California while also being within a few hours of her family. I will not live near Phoenix. It is too damn hot there. If we did move there, it would be up north.
We have looked at some properties in the Kingman area.
Nothing that I have seen has any grass at all. The Kingman area supposedly has a climate temperature similar to here in Sacramento but about half the rainfall. I would miss the grass. Our dogs play in our backyard and seem to like it as well. All of the properties that I see are full of rocky plots with a few shrubs. I understand that this is the desert so maybe I'm expecting too much.
Over the past year or so, in some cases, I've approached some matters with a different view. In the case of a meal, I tell myself that this isn't the last meal that I will ever eat. This lowers my expectations so that if it isn't spectacular, I'm okay with it because the next one might be better. Today I thought about how my next house could be looked at the same way. Moving sucks but this move does not have to be the perfect place because it probably won't be the last place that I live. However.....There are a few things that are Go/No Go.
If there is no barn or shop on site. I will build one. If the building restrictions won't allow it, I'm out. I am a car guy that gets as much from building them as driving them.
I need some land around me. I want a minimum of 5 acres and it can't be on a steep slope.
I see several properties on dirt roads. I don't like that....I have vehicles that I keep clean and the thought of running down a dusty road does not appeal to me. If the roads are some type of crushed rock that isn't too dusty, that may be okay.
I'm curious about vehicle registration in Arizona. I have several classic cars including the '75 Power Wagon. Nothing I have has the original emission equipment on it anymore. I thought I read that if they are registered as a classic, they are exempt from testing?

For your consideration @Kern Dog

Best and Worst States for Retirement | Retirement Living

The full list of states, from best to worst, is further down in the article.
I looked at that again. They based their ratings on 65 and up aged populations as their main criteria.
That is above my age range....plus I am immature. I get along better with people younger than me.

Greg,
I've moved way to many times and started over just as many. This move will be your last, so make it the right one. In your late 50's and willing to lowers your expectations so that if it isn't spectacular, I'm okay with it because the next one might be better, who are you trying to convince. By the time you get there, clean it up to your liking, and build a shop, you're more than a few years into this short term, I'm not going to stay here project. I've paid more to move than you paid for any new car you have, it's not cheap. Pack and unpack and then, pack and unpack again to get to a place you're not sure about is a suckers bet. The best state and worst state change, that why it's called in 2023. So now you're in a Arizona and by the time you're heading to 63, 64, you're going to pack it up again and find the right place. I was 64 when I moved here and it sucked. When you get to your 60's, you age faster and your ice cream will start to turn to ****.

I vacation in Arizona, Scottsdale and Sedona are my go to places. I'm not going to beat on Arizona, but, some places have all the seasons and some your shoes melt off your feet. They have a lot dirt, rocks and sand. You want grass, you'll pay for it and Arizona is changing and it's way to close to the place you're running away from. You'll see bumper stickers that say, “Don’t California My Arizona”. If you're going to move, move or just stay where you are, because, where you are is home.............. Ulli

People make trade offs to stay close enough to family. It is all about what is important in life.

In 1979 at age 31, I sold, packed up and we moved to Missouri. I was sick of the racial/school issues of SW Ga. The year before, I traveled from Ga to Ft. Worth, bought a new horse trailer and then went as far as S.D. then East and back down thru In. and home , saw states I had never seen. I loved Mo. and Ks. No job. Just moved. I bought 40 ac the year before.

Greg, Who's life are you living? Yours, or your family's? These words were spoken to me by my father when I was age 17 and considering joining the Army and leaving my family. Best advice he ever said to me.

I'm pretty sure the only area in AZ that requires emissions checks is the Phoenix area.
There is really not going to be that perfect area to move to. It's always
going to be an exercise of weighing the pro's and con's and making the
best decision you can at that particular time. BUT, do make sure the wife
is in complete agreement with the decision.

If you move to a dry state and buy property make sure you can dig a well or have access to water. Even here there are places no water. Guy about 10 miles away built 3 houses dug several 500' dry wells. Moving can take a year of your life if you stuff, get it right.

I got my '70 Charger registered and road ready in 2019. No safety inspection or emission testing for "classic" cars. This year I renewed the registration for the next 5 years for $66. No testing or inspections needed. Couldn't be better, except, Arizona is now all Dem state and after 35 years of living here I'm in the same boat as you. Searching for somewhere else, even outside this country.

We moved back up here to the central coast for family too. In our case though, it was to be away from them and the petty crap we dealt with constantly. Love having distance as a buffer.
