Who has MOVED from their home state ? How difficult was it for you?

Since you're retiring, there's
really no need to change states. Look for
smaller towns. Preferably in areas of the
state that share your general attitude towards
what you look for in the people themselves.
There are hundreds of thousands that wish
California would revert back to it's "golden
years". If you're retiring, life for you is
going to slow waaaay down. Find a slow
town.

The reasons we are looking at out of state locations is numerous.
I don't like the political climate here. They are pushing electric everything including bans on gas powered lawn equipment!
The cost of living is not killing us but other states have it a LOT better.
The sale of this place would buy a LOT bigger property and home elsewhere outright.

I only bring this up as I know full well how
climate is a huge factor in where one would
choose to reside. I've lived in many states,
and frequented others as my job required.
I'm in current ownership of my fifth house.
Southern New Mexico. Very conservative
attitudes down here, still what you may
consider as cold in the winter months.
I lived in California's climate and can
attest to it being very mild in December.
In the US you'll find none better.
I've lived in Indiana, Texas, California,
Florida, Ohio, Minnesota, and Illinois.
I choose to live here as the atnosphere
is wide open, not a lot of people or
rush hour traffic.
As with any state, stay away from any
large metropolis.

Minnesota winter climate is wearing on me. I'm a year away from retirement. And I have been peaking south. And listen in on these threads of State options. Nothing else? It's interesting to hear others experiences. Minnesota is great. But the winters are getting tough on the old bones.

No.
I hate wearing a bunch of clothes. I don't like cold hands and wearing gloves that are good enough to keep my hands warm have a negative effect on my dexterity. I can't work on things nearly as well while wearing gloves.
If I were disabled or the type that prefers to be indoors most of the time, the weather wouldn't be a factor. I've worked outdoors doing construction for most of my life and I like being outside.

I’m looking for many of the same reasons as you KD. I’ve scoured the West which is my preferred region. Originally from Mpls for 28 years. Then Chicago, Denver area (Colo Sprgs) with much time in Denver. Then CA all in OC. Spectacularly beautiful state with unmatched weather and the way I’m set up the cost of living is not a burden - but it is a serious irritant the cost of gas being $5 and the regulations here would and have choked dinosaurs. When Prop 19 passed in 2020 it now makes it more palatable to move w/I the state without being destroyed in property taxes as was so before. However as has been stated the political environment in this state is so far off the cliff from tolerable I just can’t take it anymore. The entire West Coast has been infected with the same. So sad. Where I’d always thought there were scores of places I could relocate to I’m actually finding quite the opposite.

Idaho remains high on the list but the issue I have is being 5 hOurs minimum from a decent sized Metro I prefer to be w/I a reasonable proximity of a larger Metro and it’s offerings. I am seriously relooking at South Denver - from what I’m finding Colo Sprgs has been destroyed by guess who… Denver has issues like that as well but there are areas and I still have friends there. Homes are a bit ridiculous but the taxes and other amenities are there. That along with the spectacular Rockies which I miss greatly. I can easily handle the Rocky Mtn states perceived cold weather. I think winters there are great. Not interested in East of the Mississippi - unless of course I could get my wife to NC, SC or maybe SW Florida. But my Biggest problem is getting her more than 2 hrs max from her family who all live here. That’s my burden. That and what’s happened to so many beautiful areas courtesy of the infected ones. They’re spreading everywhere and leaving ruin in their path. Such a big beautiful country - what the hell has happened to it?

Southern NM Winters are considered mild
as temps fluctuate. I've seen 70+ here in
Dec. As far as desert scenery goes (hard
to take for some), relief is 30 minutes away
with mountainous terrain, cold clear streams,
and pine trees.
You're not going to find another state that
can compete climate wise as with California.
Almost all others have higher humidities,
hurricanes, tornados, and/or blizzards. Though
California is susceptible to drizzling rain, fog,
mudslides, forest fires, horrific traffic, not
to mention a few other things that promotes
being canceled or banned from this site.
As for me, as old and used up as I am, I
prefer a low humidity climate, which
eliminates anything east of Lubbock.

I moved from central PA to the Chicago area in the 90s for career. Tripled my earnings, but I felt it was the armpit of the country from day one, absolutely nothing going for it IMO, except it was a transportation hub, and I've spent my entire career in the trucking business. Like a few smart guys who worked the Alaska pipeline when I was young, I saved the Chicago money, and took it home to State College. The town fit my needs way better once my career peaked. I'm staying here in retirement, coming up soon. Winters are rotten, but once I quit working, that won't be an issue.

S E TEXAS> Its 10 AM an I have been outside working on the floor hump on my Savoy. Sweat running off my head, down my shirt, thru my jeans, into my shoes. And it ain't summer yet. It ain't the heat...its the humidity and lack of wind.

My wife got a quote from Pods, $12k to go to Texas for 2 pods. U-Haul is $6k for a 24ft truck and car dolly. The U-Haul and car dolly is what we will end up doing as Pods is a 2 month wait! The bright side to all this is, I get to buy a an enclosed car trailer and I’m looking a couple of 24-28ft for around $12-18k. I can sell the trailer when we get settled in Texas.

Oh, U-Haul was more than 1/2 LESS going from Texas to Commiefornia!

I just went through this last Nov. from Reno, and I had the same issues trying to get the same to move East. Then I had 2 vehicles get shipped with Reliable. I'd hate to see how much has changed in 6 moths of price differences, not to mention the gas to get here? Good Luck & Congrats if your moving!
