You can’t put 15amp receptacles on a 20amp fed circuit. You certainly can put 15amp receptacles on 12 gauge wire but needs to be fed from a 15amp breaker.
Some say it's okay, as I said, many people say one thing or the other. I just follow code and NEVER run mismatched materials. 12-2 for 20 amp feed, with 20 amp switch and outlets. 14-2 for 15 amp feed, with 15 amp switch and outlets. Saving a buck when playing with eclectic is not in my vocabulary.

For me it’s not about saving a buck. I don’t need 20amp receptacle’s through out the whole shop. I can always add 20amp rec. and breakers later if need be. That’s why I used 12/2 wire. Thanks

I get that!! I split my shop in half. One wall is lined up with 20 amp, from the main box to the outlets and the other side is for everyday 15 amp. Running bigger wire is never wrong and by running it I can see you're not worried about money. The cost is getting stupid. I bought 14-3 wire for my three way switch the other week and was surprised and not in a good way. When I had my lake houses, I always had 250 of every kind of wire needed just in case, including underground. I even ran two sets of wire underground from my house to the dock in case one took a dump on me, not digging that twice. All that wire would be gold by today's cost.

I know what you mean about the price of wire. I got that same surprise when I bought this wire to sub feed my new panel box. Ouch. LolA5364167-D752-4E76-B4DD-B0C73EEC7404.jpeg
 
There is an exception in Code which permits the common 15A receptacle on 20A circuits if there are two or more sockets on the circuit. (NEC 210.21B3).

Strange as it may sound you can use 15a devices on a 20a circuit.
