LOS ANGELES, CA — While waiting in line at the Department Of Motor Vehicles, local man Roger Stephens had the chance to experience trainee Sarah Taylor's very first day on the job, watch her advance in years, and celebrate her retirement.

After arriving at eight in the morning to begin waiting in line, Stephens had the opportunity to see Taylor process her very first driver's license renewal, learn the ropes of the job, get promoted, take maternity leave (twice), and ultimately retire to spend more time with her grandkids.

"It was beautiful to watch," said Stephens, now himself a grandfather four times over. "I kind of wish I'd been able to leave here to meet my own grandchildren, but seeing the arc of Sarah's life while I waited in line was pretty neat. Oh, hey! I think my number is coming up soon."

At publishing time, Stephens had in fact been called up, only to be informed that all of his identification had expired during his decades waiting in line.

I have to go to the DMV today... not looking forward to it.

Another benefit of living in a small town in a red state - that sort of thing doesn't happen here, thank God.
That said, I can remember (not fondly) going to the DMV in northern VA back in younger years and it
definitely was like spending hours in the bar scene from Star Wars.
Ponderous, man....ponderous.

San Jose. Line often around the building. Maybe ICE will help ease these circumstances next visit.

We can call our licence issuer and ask to renew our auto licence/insurance and they will email the paperwork. We are on an automatic payment system and pay quarterly.
Driver’s licence and new registration we have to go in.
Have never waited more than 15 minutes.
If this is what you go to DMV for.

^^^ I'm not sure if i'm reading this right but are you saying that you have to pay for your licence monthly?

Which one you going to? Naperville?
Only appointment I could get was for Aurora. I was hoping for St. Charles, but no luck.
Here's me at the DMV after being there forever.

That's exactly how I looked when I opened the license renewal letter.
Coincidentally, I just got my renewal notice in the mail today. Ours isn't DMV anymore, but Service Ontario. They issue all kinds of permits. Usually not bad, unless it's hunting season, when they are issuing licences.

Line left. Line right. Needs wide angle lense. Token white guy too. Ellis Island. In reverse.
This is the “better DMV on Martinvale in South San Jose. The one on Alma, you can’t even get around the Taco truck to get into the lot.

I renewed my California drivers license, this past December at the Folsom, California office.
I was quite impressed with how well it went, with my appointment.
Was in and out of there in 20 minutes time.
Getting there, signing in, waiting for my numbers turn, and then actual face to face transaction with the DMV clerk behind the counter.
I opted to renew with the Real ID, enhanced ID, and with Veterans status on the license.
So before my actual appointment date at the DMV office, the majority of necessary paper work was already done over the internet.
Then all that the clerk had to do was type in my drivers license number, and everything then showed up on his computer screen.
License is good for 5 years, and wonder if this is the last one that i will be getting.
Currently 72, buy ya never know how much time you have left, on top of this planet Earth.

We get our hunting and fishing licenses from private issuer’s, except the for the big game draw, which comes from the Department of Natural Resources, now called SERM.
