The Roach

Yeah, the rack noise is the biggest issue. I have cycled it lock to lock several times to no avail. I do have a cooler on it. It’s not an RPM issue as it will do it (at a stop) with the engine revved to 2 grand.

The rattle happens at low speed when there’s a load on the engine. Got to get my friend’s car that I’ve been storing since November back to him so I can get my car up on the lift and have space underneath to work on.
Good luck

That 392 will shred those tires. The car may be a better all around performer than a 440-6 setup.

Haven't had much time to work on the car lately, but with the help of a friend riding shotgun with his phone GPS, I got the speedometer & odometer callibrated to within 1 mph of his phone GPS.

Got a couple bugs that I have to work through:

1. A noise & vibration coming from the steering rack when turning the wheels while not moving or at very slow speed. I was told to put some miles on it.
2. A rattle coming from underneath the car when moving & accelerating slowly at low RPMs.
3 The engine will occasionally stall when coming to a stop. I was told that the computer may have to be reflashed.
4. Rebalance the front tires.
5. Get the a/c charged.

Other than 1-3 and with the limited miles I've put on it, I'm very happy with the car.

Mine does a little of that or should I say it makes a power steering noise that seems like I feel though the steering wheel. Mines old school front end with a rack. The rack and the factory dressed engine, power steering unit, seem to work together, but not like factory, new or old. Mine has done it since 2005, I've been told. This is my second rack and it still does it, a little, compared to stock. Although parts were made for yours, mine's a lewis and clark thing, homemade prototype. Yours needs a real good hard shake down. Drive it a few hundred miles and then revisit it. As far as power over the 440 six pack, it's cleaner and more sophisticated and yes, quicker. Technology meets old school, both have their place. My personal reason for my 5.7 was simple. Get in, anytime or place and hit the key, pull it back into gear and run your foot through the floor and go. Years ago the fun for me was building, maintaining and driving. Today, work on it, what's that. I will say, years ago when I had a SBC with 550 HP, the smell out the back was priceless. Good luck!!

Lately I have been considering a 392 or Hellcat driveline for the 71 Charger roller I have. The original plan was a stroker 440,and Tremic 5 speed, but after seeing RCs build this might be the way to go, better drivability.

As long as it's a roller, why not. As I get older I find it nice to just enjoy the ease of driveability and I've had my share of sticks, pass. Mine rows just fine all by itself. For me, when I get real old, one foot and one hand till they put me down is all I'll need. Just my opinion.

Besides the additional cost, I felt that the Hellcat engine would be too much power for our old cars no matter how much you stiffen the car and upgrade the suspension without getting into ludicrous fabrication and money. For me, I'm glad I went with the 392.

How's the car doing?

Regarding my PS noise, I've been told that the (very stiff) steel reinforced pressure hose may be the problem. I ordered a length of nylon reinforced "100R3" pressure hose online, and I'm waiting for that to come in. Once I get it, I've got to measure it and have fittings crimped on. I'm told is what the factory PS hose are constructed of.

Stay tuned.

Oh man....stiffening the car for lots of power isn't all that hard!

Got the new hose in the other day & I just got the ends crimped on a couple hours ago. I'll put it all together tomorrow morning & start the process of bleeding the rack as per Bouchellon's instructions (which I didn't have before).

That sort of looks like the instruction, basically same procedures
I got with my Unisteer 'Bolt on' Rack & Pinion box
(Omni, style reverse rotation rear steer, spindle/s in-front of the tie-rods)
Power steering pump (is a GM unit) & braided steel Teflon lined houses
for my 68 RR, 10+ years ago now from Year One

Mine utilizes a Mustang II rack & a factory pump. No hoses were included with mine & I just had them made up at the local hydraulic store. They make up hoses for heavy equipment which is why they gave me such heavy hose. Hopefully, the new hoses will do the trick.
