Driving along on my 8 hr trip home 2 weeks ago. Coming down the very steep hill on I-75 into Cincinnati. Traffic coming to a halt at the bottom of the hill. Truck isn't stopping. Pedal is firm. Fortunately it was on an edge lane. Pulled onto the shoulder and missed the cars ahead. Had a pretty good gap as I don't follow close. Might've been able to stop but it was damn close. Drove slowly thru Cincinnati as the issue was no trailer brakes. The rig weighs right about 20,000 so not good. Found an exit and started duag. Fortunately an easy fix. Poor crimp at the fusible link power feed at the underwood junction box. Had a spare brake box in case. Then about 2 hours later the truck goes into neutral. The dreaded NV 4500 5th gear nut has come loose, again, 6th time. Drove home in 4th. Got it jacked up in the driveway and pulpit out. By now It's quite familiar. Ordered up a new output shaft and 5th gear. New design so hopefully this takes care of it. The last time I even welded the nut to the shaft.. Didn't stop the failure. The darn trans weighs 200lbs. Of course dropped the counter gear smashing my finger assembling it today. Fabbed up a fixture to hold the trans to the bench so the nut could be torqued to 300ft/lb. Made a fixture for the floor jack last year when it got a new clutch. Went back.in pretty easy. Started raining so x member, driveshaft, fluid and shifter tomorrow. I feel pretty blessed being able to whip this out being 70. 90 degrees today too.

Glad your OK and glad you made it home. Hope this time its a done deal.

Didn’t that thing break down on you last year about this time?

The press fit shaft is not available. A few rebuilders use the full spline slip fit shaft with Locktite 620 sleeve locker. This shaft also features a split washer that fits into a groove in the shaft held in place with a 2nd coned washer. The rebuilder I watched said this works extremly well with excellent service life. Stating units he's done this way and disasembled required a puller to remove the 5th gear that had been sealed with 620.

Last year it tore the every piece of marcel in the disc. Separating the inner and outer portions of the disc. Clutch had less than 10,000 miles. Original 11" had the same failure. It went 125,000 miles. At that time it got a 13" South bend. When replacing the stop rings a few years ago (225,000) a couple of torsional vibration springs had fallen out of the disc. South Bend wouldn't sell a disc separate. I was pissed and bought a different brand, my mistake. For last years repair it got a 20,000 lb towing capacity South Bend 13" clutch. I think part of the issue was down shifting to slow it down. The trailer brakes, rear truck brakes, and brake controller were all upgraded. Stops much better now so no down shifting is normally necesary.

Gas motor or diesel?

Gas motor or diesel?
Diesel, hopped up to about 330hp. Forgot to mention. Don't leave the shifter hole uncovered for a week waiting on parts. Damn bird came in and crapped everywhere. seats, dash, door panels. So this morning the interior got a full cleaning

Oh yuck. Id suggest a pac brake pbxr. I've had that exhaust brake on my truck since 2010 and have yet to replace the service brakes.

I grew up in Florece. That cut in the hill on 71/75 going into Covington is always packed and busy. Glad you got the issue figured out.

I thought about a 6 speed. Cost was more than it was worth. Actually on the fence right now. The slide in camper needs an upgrade. So It's either a newer camper $6-15K. Swap the trailer for a gooseneck with living quarters, $20k. Or buy an older Cummins pusher motorhome, $25-30K. Both the trailer and truck are in very nice condition and would bring decent cash in return. My bet is a little around $10K each?

Dang birds sometimes. And I'd like to have a talk with the person that named the Mockingbird as Texas' state bird. Don't have much use for Blue Jays either. As for my 97 Cummins powered truck....figured the trans would go out first but the D70 did that and the trans is still hanging in there. At least I got to install an LSD while it was apart.

Doug I swapped mine from a 5 to 6 speed. Worth every penny the truck drives so much nicer with a good load behind. I guessing I’m probably $6.5k into the swap with a core, a rebuild, and driveline shortened and lengthened, clutch and flywheel.

The only deal driving the 5 speed is wind out 4rd a bit. To be honest 95% is 60mph state roads or interstate. The only thing I use this truck for is to tow. The motorhomes are cheap enough its probably going happen.

We have been using Motorhome and then Toterhomes for 20
years now. It is more comfortable at the track.

Only time we use the Dually is when it is a single day race which
is almost never at LVMS.
