I have a 1963 Polara with 426 max wedge and a 727-push button transmission. I recently pulled it into the garage, put it neutral, set parking lever and revved it up to clean up the plugs. After a few seconds, it lurched forward, but I got it stopped before hitting anything. I checked push button mechanism to see if it was binding up. Couldn't really make anything out. The parking lever moves but does hold it in park. I have pulled it back and forth in the driveway and the transmission seems to be working ok. I crawled underneath to find that my rear housing is cracked and missing pieces out of it. Until I remove the transmission, I won't know how in depth I will be getting into. Has anyone else had this issue? What would cause it? Could it be an easy fix?

Many years ago, when I was a teenager, my dad had our 63 Plymouth backed in the garage. The overhead door was closed while doing a tune up. When completed, the car was started and revved up while in park. It lurched forward and drove thru the door and I was in front of the car. It broke the overhead door and caught me at knee level, bending my knees the way a persons knees are not supposed to bend! Anyway, there was nothing wrong with the transmission. Yours just needs the broken tail shaft housing repaired. I had the same thing happen on my Max Wedge also. Changed the housing and never had it happen again. ruffcut

Wow! New one on me for sure. Sorry about your injuries. I imagine you are still dealing with the after effects. Any idea how the tail shaft housing got broken?

No idea but that was 20 years ago, and never broke again.

Does it have the Detroit U joint at the trans [ large housing ]? They have a pin inside. Wondering if it broke & got jammed.

Pull the tail housing off. I have parts. Probably broke the park gear.
