Stock steering box bolts?

So, i was looking for a clunk in my steering tonight and found my steering box a bit loose (no loctite or lock washers cause i'm me) i cranked it down but noticed when i turn the column back and forth the whole box can still move on the bolts a little, not a big thing but would rather have it solid..

I was curious if the factory used bolts with shoulders or just threads all the way up? I could see shoulder bolts taking up the slack in the holes on the box, mine are just threads..

Don't think it matters but it's a borgeson unit..

yeah, first thing i thought of, can actually see the box sort of twist left/right, the mount stays solid.. it's not a lot but just something on my mind..

P.S. next time the motor is out i'm gong to gusset up the box mount though for sure just in case

Something pops to mind on my 65 with the Borgeson box. I can check tomorrow but I think there was one bolt that needed to be shortened so it didn't bottom out on the K. Want to say it was the outside upper one. If thats the case, only two of yours are really doing anything to hold the box to the K.

Possible.. mine aren't the original bolts, just ones that fit. i think i can get under there tomorrow with a flashlight and see inside the mount if any are bottoming out, didn't think of that

Rick Ehrenberg wrote an article where he installed a Borgeson in a 62 Savoy. The Savoy had mounting bolts that were smaller than the mounting holes of the steering box case. This could have led to a fair amount of movement. He made sleeves to slip into the holes to allow the bolts to fit with less slop.

yeah, i was wondering if the borgeson uses slightly larger holes.. right now it's not a big thing but it's something i want to take care of when the motor is out (if i ever get my block back from machining)

1966 and earlier used 7/16" bolts. The Borgeson would be drilled for 1/2" bolts. What year is your car?

AH! 1962.. that would explain it Will see if i can find bolts with shoulders, or sleeves.... thanks for the nfo!

K... did some hunting.. they make 1/2 to 7/16 sleeves for ring gear bolts.. but they are $10-13 each.. screw that.... did some more hunting and on ebay found "

1/2 to 7/16 REDUCER / INSERT SPACER HEIMS HEIM JOINTS"​

for $1.50 each.. ordered 4 (cause i will need to shorten them and there's a good chance of ruining one or shooting it across the garage...

just posting this info in case someone else has this issue at some point.
