I do a ton of these transmissions. If the hole is clean and unpitted. And the tube is smooth and unpitted. The O ring with a little trans fluid on it will seal easily. If there is pitting then RTV will fix it. If the hole is full of corrosion or has a sharp edge from jamming the tube sideways, it will leak. The hole must be clean and smooth. Clean pits or notches will seal with RTV. I use Ultra Grey.

I pulled it out again, put some rtv on the top of the O-ring and let it dry for a while. Then I cleaned the hole the best I could, put some fresh rtv on the bottom of the tube and reinstalled. I’m letting that dry overnight before I refill the fluid.

Is there a replacement for the rubber on the dipstick itself? When I pulled the tube out, I realized that the rubber grommet on the handle was split. No big deal, but Im wondering if I can get another.

Looks like Im going to have to try an aftermarket dipsitck tube. I put RTV on top of the oring, let it dry. Then I cleaned up aroung the hole and let that dry. I put some RTV at the end of the dipstick and reinstalled. After letting that dry for close to 24 hours. It still leaks. It looks like the aftermarket locking dipstick tubes have a grommet to seal it up.

I think I found out why there was no bolt on the bottom dipstick tube tab. I found this when I was removing the dipstick tube for the 3rd time. I felt around and could feel any chips around the hole for the bolt. I used a 5/16 ¾” bolt, but it seemed from the get go that it would never tighten. I guess it’s stripped before I bought the car. Question is, O bought an aftermarket dipstick tube, it has a grommet to seal instead of an airing. Will the hole where bolt belongs leak? It’s full of fluid, but I’m hoping it’s from the tube leaking. . BTW, I don’t know if you can see it, but that chip has threads on, so it from that hole for the tab.

I don’t believe that hole goes all the way thru. I’m assuming the tube has an upper bell housing bracket. That’s all that needed.

Yup, it has an upper bracket as well. I bought an Allstar dipstick tube setup. Hope it solves the leak.
