Here's something I came up with that might help.
An IBM card uses punches out of each column to designate a three digit code or a letter.
Body style 322, the 3 position is punched out of column 19, the 2 out of column 20 and the 2 out of column 21 to give us code 322 as indicated in box D BODY TYPE on the top line. Control punches help change punch positions to letters as we we for the TRIM columns 29, 30 and 31.
Some options are designated by he first two numbers of the column like column 36 RADIOS as well as the number punched out. The punch for the number 1 in this example is missing so that indicates the car got sales code 361.
The engine code is in column 50 as well as the box above the RS in MOTORS.
