Many years ago, before I retired... CN was refreshing their locomotive fleet. The most common motive power for main line travel was GM's EMD. Well, they got a price higher than they wanted (I think it was $2.2 million each) so they said no. They went to GE and ordered 40 locomotives. Then about half a year later ordered 40 more from GE.

Then they went back to EMD and got a better price for the next (bigger) order.

Meanwhile, the GE engines proved to be fairly efficient and reliable, so they did order more of those in the following years. In 2013 CN bought 35 new ES44AC locomotives from GE Transportation and 30 new SD70ACe locomotives from Electro-Motive Diesel Inc. (EMD).

Industry statistics show that GE (now Wabtec) powers a little more than half of North American rail fleets. The Wabtec main line units are usually 4400 hp. while the GE (now Progress Rail) are 4300 hp.
