Decided to take advantage of our freedoms on this wonderful Veterans Day and go back in time one hundred years.

If you haven't been to Strasburg Railroad and the Strasburg Railroad Museum in Lancaster Pa. it's worth the trip. Went with my friend and her five year old grandson. You might say we've moved up from the yearly train gardens!

A short intro to the video, The train hooks to the rear of the cars, then pulls them to the end of the line where it unhooks from the rear, moves to the front for the trip back. It's a 45 min round trip through Amish country. The cars were heated so the high twenty deg temps weren't noticed.

The Museum is across the street from the train ride and is packed full of some cool trains, exhibits, and lots of history.

Finished out the day visiting a favorite diner in that area, Rt.30 Diner, about five miles from Strasburg. They're very patriotic and serve more than you can eat for a very generous price.

Met quite a few Veterans today and of course showed our appreciation. Even the gal taking orders in our train car was a vet!

            Trains are timeless.
Doesn't matter if it's a freight or passenger. There's a certain romance to them.

Thanks for the pics! We have a narrow-gauge logger ride up in the mountains about an hour away...always enjoyable (even crossing the old truss bridges! Don't look down!)

Love the pics, born in the late fifty's, grew up with the sound of the rail industry. Five or six year's ago, I was called in to trouble shoot a A/C system, to my surprise, the unit the customer was wanting some service repairs on , was a 1949 Budd Dome car. Have seen these my entire life, however, had never had the opportunity to ride, or explore one. Quite the unique vehicle. Have a few pics to share. If anyone has a chance to ride in one, jump on it!!!!!Oh yeah, dam charger, kept jumping into the pictures...

When I was very young I lived next to a busy UP line. Every time I heard a whistle I would run out and watch all the different cars and engines.
Once I run outside in time to see a steam engine pulling a passenger train. This was 82-83 ish.
A couple of my present day fields have an old extinct Rock Island Line running through it. With a few stone bridges circa 1886 still intact. Ive found old coins and spikes on it.
There were a few derailed boxcar on it years ago that I would play in as a boy.
It's as if they just mothballed the line and walked away from it when they sold out to CNW in 1980.

Very cool...I worked on many of those Budd cars for VIA. Is this one part of the Credit Valley Explorer excursion train?

It was cold but did you go outside and see the monster 4-8-2 outside? I would have loved to see that running the rails in its day!

Has anyone been here? It's not nearly as big as the PRR museum but has it's own charm. New Hope PA, cold but my favorite time to visit is around Christmas time, all decorated around town and train station.

An on and off excursion train around the Vancouver area, the Royal Hudson 2860 is currently being refurbished again after the boiler certificate expired in Jan. 2011. It was pretty popular with train buffs. This Hudson series of locomotives have a crown on the running board after being used in 1939 to carry the British King and Queen across Canada. There are currently four of these 4-6-4 locomotives left, from about 65 built for the CPR by the Montreal Locomotive Works.

There's an identical one just out of the picture. One is a UP the other a CN.

I fish here quite a bit.

Cool place Kid, been there lots of times. Lots to do around there too, and the food!
I live near a small town which advertises itself as "The birthplace of the American Railroad ". It barely maintains a track nowadays, but still does short excursions, kinda neat.
Steamtown National historic site is close too, seeing the roundhouse is amazing.

Absolutely great experience, went a couple times when the kids were young. Got to go back, for sure.

Wiley it’s all about “old, big iron”. And for anybody interested the cuyahoga valley railroad below Cleveland runs a railroad also. The “Polar Express” runs there every Christmas time.
