Gear Vendors on a A833

I read that earlier. It didn’t tell me anything. Is there a button you push or an extra gear?
Neither...I thought it was ratio changes for gears 1st though 4th with 4th being an overdrive ratio.

I think it has different options. Button for ratio changes 1-4 or standard ratio 1-4 wit a button change on 4. Plus their website says 0.54 ratio on O/D. So I’m thoroughly confused. I think they have different set ups to purchase.

Automatic engagement with manual button IIRC.

...and don't back up with it engaged.

833 OD is .69 for a truck unit.

.73 for a A/F body one.

IIRC

I know this doesn't answer your question but have you considered going with a silver sport transmission tkx 5 speed? I considered a gear vendors unit for myu 727 until I saw a conversion kit.

This was 5 years ago but I got a full auto conversion kit for around $5,500 on my 72. You would likely need less since you already have a manual car and the proper tunnel. If the prices are still similar, you would only be about 1800-2200 more AND you have a true 5 speed. You could also sell your manual too if you wanted to recoupe some cost. That 5 speed was the best decision I ever made on mine. I had a stout 340 with 3.55 gears and I could cruise on the highway at 80 at 1,900 RPMS. MORE than worth the extra cost to me.

I looked at those too. May have to revisit them. I quit looking when I saw a bench seat might be a problem and the price. Now that I know the gear vendors is electronic, I don’t want it.

0.78 don’t do **** for rpm’s. Maybe 200 reduction.
Its going to depend on final drive and tire size but it should be more than 200rpm, example in photos below.

Another option is the Passon Hemi OD trans. I currently am running one of these and have been mostly happy with it. With every option it seems like there is a compromise, TKX is big $$ and involves some cutting but seems like the best option from a functionality point, passon hemi OD is less expensive and requires no cutting but the RPM drop from 1-2 and 2-3 is noticeable over a standard a833. Gear vendors is I believe the least expensive option but might require a little cutting still. Also, I believe in addition to the activation via button there is an option to automatically turn it off below a certain speed, but I may be wrong.

I used a similar calculator. For 410 gears and 26 inch tires it’s not that big of a drop
I think you've made a mistake in your calcs.

For 4.10 gears with a 26" tire I get 2,900 rpm at 70 mph with a .78 O/D, and 3,700rpm with a 1:1 ratio at the same mph.

You are correct. Still 800 rpm in my mind isn’t that much. GV advertises a .54 and .78. .54 would be more like what I would want that would put it at 2000. RPM at 70mph. But GV website doesn’t do a very good job of explaining the 4 different options they have. I also don’t like the idea of a button that needs to be pushed.

I switched from an A833 to a cast iron A833OD for a cross country trip, thinking I'd switch back after we returned home.

Nope.

It's great, inexpensive, kept my bench seat, no hacking the floor, direct swap to my bellhousing, shifter, driveshaft.

75mph @2,100rpm with 3.23s and a 28" tall tire.

Tell me more. What exactly is the A833OD. Is that a factory Chrysler.

800 rpm drop is HUGE.
My rpm at 70 mph used to be 3,100 with the 727. Switching to a TKX with a .81 O/D it dropped to about 2,400 rpm.

That 700 rpm drop makes a massive difference, to noise, mpg and mechanical wear. Heck, even 500 rpm is significant. Ask others who've done similar swaps e.g. @Kern Dog
