Wiring Questions / Discussion

My 2 cents

Get as much load off the OEM harness as you can. Headlights, blower motor, AC compressor. It will help the system

On OEM, DO NOT trigger engine compartment items using the wire that goes to the ballast resistor. Want the steering column and harness to go up in smoke. you'll kill the blue wire from your ignition switch. Run that source to a relay and fire accessories from an independent clean power source.

I build battery cables using welding cable. Good stuff, flexible and easy to route. EPDM is the cable jacket material.

Don't ignore good ground paths.

i was also going to suggest making sure to have good grounds and several as needed.
also, if building from scratch or modifying a kit, make sure to use a good grade of terminal ends as well as using a good crimping tool that is proper for the terminal ends being used. this means those 967 piece terminal end kits with the cheezy maycrimp tool you can buy for $2.69 at hobo fright ain't the right items to use !

I really like my Astro crimping tool set.

When I did the complete rewire of my car, it was complete!

1. Brand new Ron Francis kit for everything! Brand new fuse box completely updated! New harnesses for everything! Front and rear everywhere!
2. My bulkhead connector was very sloppy and wires were loose and just removed it and build a grommet panel that covered the existing bulkhead hole and was all insulated so wires couldn’t chafe.
3. Part of the reason I chose the Ron Francis kit was the wire used at the time! They didn’t go cheap on that and I paid for it! But it’s been flawless so far! Don’t go cheap on wire!
4. I’ll leave to the folks that know more about that than me! Sorry can’t help ya!

Good luck!

This was the pile once I removed it all from the car!

Which Ron Francis harness did you use? I've got a 72 Charger that needs rewiring.

Good Luck!! Get a plan and work a day. Then another plan, work a day. I’m pretty good with electrical but I wanted it neat all throughout. I’d never done a vehicle before so it was slow and methodical for me! Came out nice too. It was a good kit to work with. I will also say the instructions say to use RF schematic, that is true but keep the original there too to cross reference! If you’re keeping the old steering wheel, you’ll need the original schematic to wire it up!
