Want to make your furry kids happy? How about some regular biscuits dipped in meat juice, these were done with Bacon, bake them for a bit so the fun stuff permeates. We give them one each every couple of days.
Last year on our hunting trip Cora found fresh coyote crap and rolled joyfully in it. I was not impressed. Last week it was goose crap. In some ways she’s so smart. Then she can be a complete idiot.Ready to roll in the mud or a nice, fresh, steaming prairie pizza!

Yeah funny how they can time it perfectly to roll in something completely putrid smelling, Lenny has done that to me a couple times just before loading up in the truck for a trip- once a nicely fermented dead bird just before heading out on a 6 hour drive to my daughters, and once when he found a dead deer in the mountains while I was tying down the offroad rig to the trailer for a three hour drive home. It was windows down in 25 degree weather that timeWhen my wife and I were first going out, we went on a walk through some cattle grazing area with her dog. Her dog found a nice fresh, steaming pizza to roll on. She was very proud of herself. I tossed her in a creek twice for a wash off since the dog was riding in the cab, 85 Yota truck, with us and didn't want to deal with the aroma. Needless to say, the dog was bummed.
WOW, Im so sorry for you and your family. RIP Bella. I know the pain .Sad days in our house. We had to put our beautiful golden retriever Bella down on Friday. She was about 2 months shy of 10 - too young and several years before we were expecting this. We started noticing some changes in her last weekend, most notably her belly looked bloated and she seemed to be panting more than usual, so my wife took her to the vet Monday. She went to one of the vets in town because our regular vet was gone for a few days. They did an exam and took an x-ray that revealed her heart was 3X its normal size. She was in the late stages of congestive heart failure. Her lungs were restricted by her heart and all the fluids that were collecting in her body which only allowed her to take short breaths. The vet sent her down to the emergency clinic where they have a veterinary cardiologist. After a consultation, we received the grim prognosis that she was headed for cardiac or respiratory failure. Not sure when, but not long.
There were treatment options offered but not recommended for a dog her age so we did not pursue them. At best, they may have bought us a few more weeks or months but there was no cure. We brought her home with some meds to relieve the immediate symptoms and keep her comfortable. That bought us enough time to schedule a house call with our regular vet. We spent the week doting on her and loving on her as much as we could. We walked her around so she could visit with her favorite neighbors, both 2- and 4-legged types. It was difficult because she would get excited in the moment and seem quite normal but then we would see the toll on her afterward from expending that energy. We know we did the right thing for her but that hasn't made this any easier.
Our vet had seen her several times over the last few months for a nagging wound on her tail that didn't want to heal. The vet didn't see anything concerning in those visits, including a debridement surgery on her wound, that would have warned us this was coming. He told us the outcome would not have changed, except for possible the timing, even if we had found it sooner. We take some solace in knowing that it happened fast and she did not suffer long but, of course, that hasn't stopped us second guessing ourselves and thinking about signs we missed or dismissed. She's panting a lot and doesn't want to be outside much when she loved being outside...well, it's really hot and humid out. She didn't eat her food...well, she skips meals from time to time.
We are struggling to accept our new normal without her. Everything feels so empty now that her larger-than-life presence is gone. She will likely be our last dog as I am hoping to retire within a year and then we'd like to travel more.
Give your dogs some extra love and treats on Bella. We miss you terribly big girl and we'll see you on the other side.
