I have read in the past, where Chrome can be powder coated. I'm considering powder coating some of the interior trim pieces to a black chrome color. Have any of you guys had any experience with powder coating chrome and if so, what preparation did you do before sending the item(s) to the powder coating company? Sandblast, dipping at a chrome shop or...?

Thanks

Cudachick should beable to answer this. She does this stuff for living and is based out in Arizona if memory serves me.

I had all my interior pieces powdercoated in chrome on my 67 Belvedere ..They look fantastic......All I did was carry them to the powdecoat shop and they did it all...Blasted them, coated them & cleared them. Now I'm thinking of doing the side mldgs.I also had the grille and headlight doors done. All pieces look really good.......

Hi B392 ... Sorry for the delay; I don't get over here very often.

I'm guessing the interior pieces you want coated in a black chrome aren't really chrome but are probably polished stainless. A light blasting should be all that's required, along with normal powder work prep you shouldn't have to worry yourself with.

Any prep work a customer does for me is reflected on the bill ... I'd rather spend my day spraying powders than scraping three inches of road grime off your tranny pan, so I give a pretty good break when customers send me clean parts to work on.

Real factory chrome can be powder coated too by the way. Candy translucents look really cool -- like a colored mirror -- but it works best on metal that's in great shape. This is one of those cheaper Summit chrome air cleaners done in Wilder Red.

Thanks for thinkin of me 5.7 and Runner! You guys are great.

B392, if I can help you out at all, please let me know.

Thank you for the reply. The items are chrome, the interior window trim, both front and rear, and the chrome strips along the interior roof line. Because some if not most show signs of minor pitting, I'm wondering if blasting will be enough? Because of the pitting, would each item have to be stripped of all the chrome?

Powder coating chrome will dull it alittle but you won't have polish it as much. It just won't shime like bare chrome. If it did everyone at the big shows would do it. And you have double the costs. I'll check this out more at the SEMA show coming up in Nov.
