68 GTX Tail Panel Resto...

Thanks Jay!

i did buy the one Dave found that same day, but the order is "awaiting fulfillment".

i may just buy this one anyways, as i will still have the original tail panel in stock.

i've been poking around to find the tail light bezel hardware also, and have had no luck if any of y'all know of a place i would appreciate it!!

time to take this thread out of moth balls...

finally got time to get going on the tail panel and tail lights.

took all the original hardware off and they are in the rock tumbler as we speak.

the bezels are on their way (yes, i bought re-pops in the interest of time and $$)

just have a little sanding left to do on the tail panel and when the bezels arrive, im going to sand the argent off them and spray all the parts all at once so they match.

hopefully by this weekend i can start spraying the primer.

i reckon the trunk looks pretty clean...

i really only have one snafu (famous last words lol), how do you get the "GTX" emblem off the tail panel? im going to clean it up and re-use it, but i cant get it off my original panel. i was thinking a center punch, but i dont want to damage the studs. Thanks guys!!!

ooouuu...Tough one Mar. Reminds me of how ma mopar used that same technique to secure the inner vent window frames to the chrome outer frame.....crush pins. My suggestion would be A) leave it on, work around it. B) Take a Dremel or a die grinder, shave the crush pins flush from the backside so the emblem comes out. Work the pins flush to the emblem and use a really decent two sided tape like Loctite's to secure back on. Use a razor to trim the unwanted excess tape around the emblem.

Good luck.

You could give it a whirl Mario. Be real careful. That pot metal acts real funny when you put any kind of generous heat to it. Gets brittle, can crack. I imagine a couple good slugs with a punch and that metal mushroomed over may break away releasing the emblem. Question is, how much is it going to take to get it to give? Enough to erupt out the metal around the pins, or worse...slip of the punch and a smack to the finish panel itself. Who know's? You're the lucky pioneer getting to figure it out. Either way you go, best of luck to ya. I know those panels are like a small fortune. Your project is looking great thus far!

Now that would be the way to go if it's the right one. Funny how yours is a one shot deal and that one actually has studs for mounting. Crazy Chrysler folks I tell ya.

yep, Mario da trailblazer!! LOL

the metal isnt mushroomed over, that's the lip of the stud attached to the panel itself. if you look closely at the left one, you can kinda see a seam there

i've got a couple of days yet to sort this one out, goin to wind up the noggin and see what gets spit out. ill report back...thanks Will

Ahhhhhhhhh...I got ya now. I see the madness. Doah! Sorry. I'm guessing you're on the right lines with a punch. Give'er some taps and see what happens. If not, a drill bit a little larger than the stud. Worse case, like mentioned....grind it flush.

No problem fellas. They make really nice stuff, somewhat salty, but nice.

OMG... that just turned my stomach. holy crap. i hope dude was ok...

wonder if he'll sell me his grille and tailpanel lol

wow!!! what's the story and outcome of that picture?!! Hope he walked away ok!!

Looks like Mar got a little to excited and had some cabin fever had to jump in the car for some fun and he got out of controll

i can't even figure out the logistics of how that even happened to wind up positioned like that!

I give it a 7 out of 10 for effort though.

concur with MarPar that is sickening :(

me thinks he came into the parking lot all silly sideways and nailed that pole.
