Long-time Mopar fan, current resident of FABO, so all you cross-forum guys should know me... Anyways, my mom and step pops just dug out my dad's old '70 Roadrunner project for me to start playing with post-deployment (no, I'm not from Afghanistan, I'm just here to make bad guys dead guys)... Figured I'd need to get into this forum to source parts and expertise.... Anyways, on with the pics!!!

The only pics I have.... Dad died about 15 years ago, leaving me with this project. With no money, time, access, or etc., it simply sat... A good thing and a bad thing, as it was indoors and packed-up... - CK

Welcome aboard. My 1st car was a '70 RoadRunner, same color too. Good luck with it.

Welcome aboard! 23 year AF retired guy here. Thank you for your service; now get that RR on the road!!!

I would think your dad would be very proud of you for even considering to restore his ride, I know I would be. Good luck and think positive.

Ya, when he died we had a hell of a time figuring out what to do with all of his cars; he was an avid Mopar collector; Fury III, Cordoba, Newport, Duster, Imperial, Roadrunner, etc... Most of them disappeared mysteriously, but the 'Bird got saved because it was Dad's pride and joy, and I'll be damned if someone else has their way with my dad's car.

We've had offers on it ranging from a thousand to ten thousand, and we've denied every last one. Once she's finished, she's going to be an heirloom. My kid will drive his date to the prom in Dad's 'Bird, and once I get croak, she'll be passed on. My family came from dirt-poor farmers; we have really nothing in the way of heirlooms. This car, however, changes that.

Welcome to the site. Good to hear you are able to restore your Dad's favorite car. There are some great guys here that will help with any questions that you have.

Welcome aboard, I'm also on FABO for the /6 section. I'm surprised that they don't have one here, what's up with that? 24 years A.F. and still flying!

welcome to the DARKSIDE...LOL...

Great story & good luck

Came back home for post-deployment leave, was able to recon the 'bird close-up. Here's some pics and some news!!

Love the rear glass shape... I'll hate it when I have to cut it out to fix up the window frame rust and lay paint, but at the moment, I LOVE the rear glass shape!!

Who could say no to a face like that!?

It may have been lightly wrecked on this side; green fender + slightly FUBAR'd front of door skin, etc. It's still straight, but it may have been fender-bendered...

Like I said, it's straight...

Anybody ever seen this sticker before? It was a shield with Road Runner on it, and the top left corner says "ROAD" horizontally then "RUNNER" vertically. I'm pretty sure it was some junk dime-store sticker someone slapped on each side, but would be neat to figure out what it looked like originally.

Another shot showing that beautiful 440 dad stuffed in. It's quite obviously bored and cammed with how lopey, loud, and responsive she is. I think his final number was upwards from 550-600hp before he died... Would have to dyno it to be sure, but I think factory was somewhere around 400, and I know he greatly exceeded that once the engine was finished. By the way, the engine sat under a crate in our garage since I was born, and he stuffed it in the car just six months or a year before he was killed (so about 11 years' worth of tinkering and modding)...

Luckily, not a lot of the trunk is in awful shape! I could most likely get away with just the middle of the trunk pan (the solid-rust spot), and a good sandblasting and sealing of the rest. The trunk extension pieces are still good too, though I'll have to open them up to do some light quarter and well work. :)

A quickie shot of the passenger floor pans. Only badass rust is in the corner of the firewall and a bit on the foot panel, the rest is bright red and pitted but not bad at all. Again, a good sandblast and seal would probably fix it, and if the sand knocks holes in it, it's such a small spot that patching would be stupid simple.

Driver's side. Again, very little bad rust. I may not even have to patch this one anywhere! The valleys behind the pro racing seat look much worse than they actually are.

Love them hips. This car has the sexiest lines I've ever seen ever.

Tic-toc-tac! I've heard the tick-tock-tach is fairly rare, not sure about how rare in the Birds, but I got one. :)

And finally, the nicest rear-end a car company has ever designed ever forever. <3

I also want to put an air grabber scoop and 6-pack carb setup on, as well as a go-wing. And all you purists out there about to crucify me for not following the codes to original spec can eat me. If it had the original 383, maybe, but Dad wanted to make her a hot-rod, so that's the direction she's going. BUT! One thing the purists -will- like is this:

For years now, I always said I was going to do B7, the darkest of the blues offered that year... Yesterday while checking the fender tag, I find out IT'S AN ORIGINAL B7 CAR!!! I mainly picked B7 because I've seen very few '70 birds in B7, and I find out mine, with the plan to go B7, was originally B7!! So she will be painted the factory color. :D

LOL... :iamwithstupid: yeah screw the purist, build it how you want it & drive it like you stole it, I always do... I'm on my 13th RR 68-71's... it sound like that's what your dad wanted to do too... fulfill his dream & yours, not someone else's ideas of how they would do their own car... have fun that's what it's all about

yep some great hips on her

the shape of the back glass is great, I love them too

B7 is a great color, it's a plus too if that it was the original color... win win IMHFO

last but not least... thank you for your military service it can't be said enough...

A bit of an afterword, since I was slightly pressed for time when I posted last...

The drip rails are in great shape, a bit of browning in there but nothing serious. The doors are quite clean around where the skin and the frame meet up, but I'll still have to reskin the driver's door because of the large pit of nasty on the front end of it. The quarters are near-flawless with honestly not much rust work to be done (a bit around the fender well on the rear left and the rear bottom, maybe the rear top where the ***-end finisher piece mates. The driver's side quarter right up by the top rear door corner also has a fairly nasty little rash of cancer. This may also require some surgery.

From what I saw of the frame rails, they're good. They -might- need one or two small (like 2.5" squared) chunks of patch metal, but other than that they're solid.

I'm honestly tempted to keep the interior blue because I think the blue would look nice in there. I cannot use the pieces inside because the car has been a mouse house for the past 20+ years (when dad got it, he parked it in a garage stuck away in a tree row and it got moused out quick, hence why the interior is stripped) and the smell of mouse and dead mouse has gotten into literally every stitch of fabric and even soaked into the metal a bit. Once I start blasting, cutting, welding, and sealing, the smell will drift away, but even the steering column has to go because it stinks. I may have to get new gauges and stuff just because of that smell.

She also needs brakes. I was contemplating swapping to front disc since I have a '76 Duster with front discs and apparently that stuff bolts right up! But, I'm trying to sell the Duster as a complete car because it is in far too good of shape to be parting out and I don't have the time, funds, or energy to be devoting to such a project...

She will also most likely need to be rewired. I've not played with anything electrical, but I figure a rewire job would be in order for the 43 year-old wiring.

She needs a new windshield. I was also thinking of tinting the windows a bit, just enough to give it some darkness to go with the dark blue... Not some crazy 2% or limo tint all around (also because ND has a 35% limit on front windows), maybe 35% all around at the darkest...

Anyway, there's sleep to be had, so goodnight for now, FBBO!
