I really don't know if this is right section for this question, but here goes
I had what I thought was water spots in the paint finish(1968 Coronet R/T); last year at Carlisle I bought compound and wax, helped but was really a lot of hard scrubbing,so this year at carlisle they were pushing a DA tool for compound/polish and then the wax. Well the compound produced black residue which I cannot get out, I don't know if I let compound dry, but if so it dried really quick, I continued on hoping polish would help, all it did was make it shine, then put wax on still looks like smudges in compound coat.
Question is now, what to do, I know I have to start over, but is there something else out there that works better(this is Mequiars products), I have also been told the black is old wax, is that true and again how do i get rid of it?

Photos please. It is hard to give advice without them.

May have to try several things like wax and grease remover, put the compound on wet and see if that does it.claying it may work.

If it were me, I would call Meguiars and see what they tell you to try.

First of all, even without seeing it I can say there is no way those marks are IN the paint or clear coat. Unless you have burned it when buffing. They can look like dark 'streaks' which means you cut into the clear. Just post up photos, take them from a few angles. We need to see if these are SPOTS or STREAKS.

Meguiar's swirl remover 2.0 #9 or 3M perfect-it 3000 swirl remover. Either one by hand should eliminate your issue. Micro finishing glaze might even catch it. Obviously you need to throw a couple more coats of wax back on. I'd be very careful with any king of a compound and a machine buffer with some rpm, if you don't have experience. Very easy to burn through edges, lines and corners, if you don't know what you're doing. I'm guessing that little DA you bought doesn't have enough snort to do so though. Just my 2 cents..good luck
