I guess it's a good thing that my 69 Super Bee didn't have the numbers matching drive train in it when I bought it several years ago. I'm in the process of bringing it back to life again. It's finally painted and waiting to be put back together. After the engine compartment was sandblasted to remove the black paint that someone incorrectly painted it I started looking for the vin numbers on the radiator support and the trunk drip rail. There are NO numbers anywhere that they are supposed to be. I went over those places with a fine tooth comb. I've heard that this doesn't happen, but who knows? Maybe this is one for the books. And, it's very obvious that none of the sheetmetal in those areas has been replaced. Only rust to speak of was in the rear window corners.

Anything could have happened on the line back then. I've heard of new guys on the stampers who didn't change the numbers so all the cars for a couple of hours had the same numbers in the hidden locations. Some cars got missed. They didn't care that much - the end result didn't look any different or make the car harder to sell because nobody was looking at the numbers.

Don't worry, you have a Bee! People today are way out there. The only reason VIN #'s were on cars in 1969 was for theft prevention. Theft was rampant, as everybody wanted that HP engine for their car. It was never Intended to help us crazed stupid people to document a rare car. That concept didn't exist then. To them, we are truly nuts.(if they were alive)

So today, us old guys(class of 70') look at them with humor, in the end a car was meant to go down the road, beat a chevy, please the girl, nothing else. This my flipping the big bird at Numbers matching nut cases.

I laugh when I see the adds on c.l. they read "numbers matching 73 charger all org 318 and auto bench seat column shifter needs resto $15,000" I ask the owner if the price is a typo he ment $1500 he said no it's a numbers matching car $15000 . I can't believe some of these guys ,I understand the nom hemi cars or 413 wedge cars or 1 of 1 but a base model 318 charger full of rust ???

It is just an example of more greedy stupid people. I'm glad so many of us here are above that! HA HA!

in all honesty, I also have numbers matching original muscle cars. But my favorite Isn't, and my wife likes the same car, so that is all that matters.

To tell the truth, I'm glad too that some owner before me decided to remove the auto on the column and convert it to a 4 speed. That conversion was done poorly, painted the engine compartment black, used a piece of angle iron for the zbar frame pivot and a few other things. I'm going back with the original f6 paint, changing out the bench seat for buckets and a console, and adding power steering. At least it will be close to what I would have ordered if I had the chance.

My runner isn't nm either. I know that it is a 383 4-speed hard top in Bahama yellow that's it, so like you I have creative license.so build it the way you want it then drive the hell out of it!

Any 69' Coronet is good to me. I have an F8 Green 69 440 Hardtop I drive regularly. I loved them when they were new!

Numbers matching cars are probably survivors or basket cases that someone found sitting around for a long time. If you work on them you usually end up changing a part that cancels the numbers matching theme at some point. Who really cares? Not me.

My 70RR was rotisserie restored, has matching numbers 383. The guy who restored it changed it from a bench column to bucket console shift and added an airgrabber and go wing. As far as I'm concerned, like themechanic says, that ultimately cancelled the numbers matching theme. But to me, his mods were an improvement that added value and enjoyment/appreciation of the car. I am going to convert it to a 4 speed in the spring. It's all about enjoying your car !!!!!!

One thing I like about the '62-'65 cars is there are no numbers to match - just date code correct. In my case, when I drop a big block into it, who cares that I pulled the original Poly out? I just want to have fun with it. I do enjoy the stories of the survivor cars, but I'm glad to not have the burden of having a numbers matching car. Back in the early '80s when I had my '70 GTX, I knew the original engine was long gone when I bought it (blowed up). That was very common with these cars. Ironically, the engine that was in it may have been out of an A-12 Road Runner.

Geewiz my car doesn't seem to care if the numbers match or not. This originality thing is beginning to be a little silly. Are you going to park it because it does not still have the parts it came with from the factory or use what parts are available and drive it?
