looks like im gona take on painting my 67 rt myself ,Ive taken apart ,stripped down, primed and blocked out my cars before but never sprayed on the color I had a body shop that would do it for a fair price but just found out they closed a few months ago
And i cant find a shop that is interested in doing it in my area I think ill do one or two of my work trucks for practice before I do the r/t

I did a base/clear for my first time a year and a half ago on my daughter's car and I surprised myself. It even still looks good lol. A buddy did like you did and used Maaco for the finish and got pretty decent paint jobs for the money.

Painted a '62 Belvedere under a sappy tree on a hot humid day, with 2 water traps, and a ton of retarder( evaporates more slowly than standard), ....single stage (years ago)...& wet sand and buff....= it turned out great!...

Barry and the SPI guys are guiding me through the process, with the guys here helping me get the body straight. I am shooting color this weekend, stripes next week and clear next weekend. Follow along. So far it is turning out FAR beyond my expectations!

It's not brain surgery. Follow the tech sheets and get some practice on your work trucks. Good luck.

Are you painting outside or making a booth? I made my both out of some 2x4s and white tarps. I have an exhaust fan in the shop and used furnace filters for intakes. The door is a remodeling doorway cover. Works pretty darn good. What kind of paint are you using? Solid colors are fairly easy. Metallics are more fun. Practice on your doors or trunk lid. Make sure if you paint metallic to take the panel out in the sun after it is done! It took me a couple of practice panels to figure out how to drop coat the metallic correctly.

My suggestions are, make a booth out of plastic, wet the floor, prevent any breeze, wash it very well followed by a wipe down with final wash, use at least a moisture filter on the gun, always lay your first coat light to create a tacky surface and put plenty of clear on for wet sanding. I've had really good luck with the plastic makeshift booths and even had some that needed no sanding or buffing when finished. When laying the base keep in mind that it dries super quick, take advantage of this to sand out any blemishes that you encounter (dirt in the base likely results in sanding threw the clear to fix).

Oh yeah, don't forget the tack rags.

X2 on the tack rags. Allow the base coat proper flash time and tack it off between each coat.

One more very good suggestion. Make sure you have good clean dry air! I use a water trap shortly after the compressor and this filter at the air hose. There is 50ft of pipe between the compressor and the filter. Gives the air a chance to cool. My local restoration guy told me there is 2 things that will ruin your day painting. Water in the air and a moth.

Heak ya try it yourself. Where in PA. are you ? I am in PA. & I do paint work on the side. Any questions feel free to ask. Good luck

You shouldn't have any problems if you can shoot the primer then the color shouldn't be a problem. I'm also getting ready to shoot the color on my 67R/T, Good luck with your project.

IM gona make a booth in my garage being a general contractor the set up is kinda easy for me, ill do this when my business is slow over winter and then the humidity wont be a issue , its a white car none metallic ,and have a good system for water in the line im kinda a over kill guy when it comes to things like that, I live in camp hill area
