Sebring vs Roadrunner Huge Value Difference!

I think I just got the answer to my question. They were not different models afterall. The Sebring is the base version of the RR. So they are the same car separated by engines/trim.

Would it be a mistake to buy a $40k rotiserrie restored and big block Sebring? Wondering if most people expect to only spend that much on a RR regardless if they are the same and that someone invested a ton.
In my opinion, yes, it would be a "mistake" to pay 40k for a restored Sebring.
A driver in the teens, sure. Build it and modify it with no regrets.
If I was to budget 40k for a done car, I'd want a RR, GTX, superbee, etc.....

This is not meant to be snobbish, but a RR has the name recognition / desirability and a Sebring is Just not in that league.

Investing in cars, isn't for novices, and timing is everything. Looks like a falling market that at some time in the future....will not recover. Just look art earlier generations of popular cars. As the audience shrinks[people aging]....the prices drop. There's gonna be WAY more cars than buyers, soon.

That's such a true statement that a lot of guys don't see. Can't say I see to many guys in their 20's cruisin around in vintage mopars, I'm one of the younger guys around here and I'm late 30's. not looking good boys...

I appreciate the candor. This is what I wast thinking. Though something tells me the market is coming as people age. And that car is like new. Someone will eventually get it for like $35k and it will be the only no expense spared restomod Sebring and will fetch $60k some day haha.

As stated above the badge makes a huge difference take a. firebird and trans am you couldn't give a firebird away but it's basically the same car little less fancy. Don't focus on the values that means nothing some *** hole makes that crap up . Look and do your own research compare real cars obviously a car with a built /blown motor is going to cost more . Don't look at it as an investment .buy what you want and enjoy it guess what in 3-4 years you might make some return good for you if not keep it remember you liked it .don't get something you can't live with you might be stuck with it till the day you die. I have $25000+ invested in my 72 rallye charger book on it is probably around 17-20 ish guess what it's no wear near being done I'm loosing my *** if I look at it as an investment. But I'm building it my way for me so guess what I don't care!

What about THIS SSP? It is restored to better than new. And a 505 big block. Listen to it! http://www.streetdreamstexas.com/hireshow.php?command=showimage&pk=72-4153C
That's a beautiful car, but its sort of a hodgepodge of different models. I think you are not getting it. You refer to the car as a Sebring one time and a SSP (Satellite Sebring Plus) another time. I'm not really sure what it is. The base Satellite, the Satellite Sebring, the Satellite Sebring Plus. It also has the roadrunner stripes and the bird on the grill.
I have a 71 Satellite Sebring. Bought it new from a dealership. I always wanted a roadrunner, but when I restored it, I used a SSP as a parts car and I liked the rally dash and badges and interior of the SSP. My car is still a Sat Sebring and if someone asks me at a show, I tell them. To me, its worth more than what book value says, but I like it. Oh and by the way a 440 was not available in the Sat, Sat Sebring or SSP as I understand. (or 340)

You are going to look a long long time for an original RR 440-6 for sale. If you find one I really doubt if 61k will buy it.
Value has got a lot to due with production numbers.
My guess there are a lot more 72 RR 440 cars out there today than were ever produced. So you had better know what your buying. After all out of less than 500 of them and 45 years take a guess at how many really exist.

"I think you are not getting it" is an understatement. Evokings posts seem to be all over the place. First post was all about being set on buying a 69 superbee. And citing rediculously priced examples as if to flaunt the prices.(this post seems to be alot of proce flaunting too) Claiming hes owned all sorts of great fast cars and that hes current toy is a lambo. (Sorry if youre real, but keyboards and smart phones make it oh so easy to be who youre not and your posts have been very much coming from every direction, maybe a pic of the lambo or the 68 charger with your with evoking and the date handwritten sitting on the hood?) But internet makes that easy. (Not saying your a bullsh*tting 15year but you get the point) Then completely redirects and claimed he bought a "mint" 68 charger R/T But then in other posts about values of restomodding back pedaled saying it was really a 318 car with a 360 in it. Asking about having a 727 recased for a big block buying 510hp crate 440 for $8000 on ebay. Most any of us on this forum can put 3k of parts into our 440s by ourselves over a weekend and have more then 500hp. So im not sure he does his own work. But now hes looking at 72 plymouths? I thought he just bought a car? Sorry evoking but the flood of posts youve had the last two days im beginning to question where your basis for any of this comes from? Hell when i was 14 i got my first car to work on. A 6cyl 67 mustang. Back then chat rooms were getting big on aol and i found a car one. I knew nothing about cars but knew the buzz words. Trying to be a cool guy behind my keyboard answering questions i had no clue about "um its got a 500hp 454 in it" " um oh ya i know thats a chevy motor, its what i had lying around and thought itd be funny." Then they asked what rear end ratio i had, i had no idea what that meant. I remember i said "its a 3/5s" haha hey a fractions technically a ratio right? Lol total bs. Anyways. For a "car guy" theres alot of lack of knowledge that wouldve been cleared up in 5 minutes on google. No im not saying youre a 14 yearold with buzz word knowledge, youre far more eloquent and hearty with your language. But by all means we're all car folk here and we love helping eachother from novice to pro. This is in no means an attack on you just looking for clarification. So mabye a legitimate introduction post somewhere with info and pics of your cars so we know where youre coming from. And if that is that youre 20 years old, know nothing about cars but just inherited a boatload of money from a car loving grandfather and youd like to carry on with that but need to learn, or your a guy in his 60s who comes from family money or started a very successful company you just sold, and you truly are a car guy just have a.d.d like the rest of us and have the means and want to buy every car thats sparked your interest, triggering all the random posts. Either of those are perfectly acceptable, but either way letting us know where youre coming from, all of us would know exactly how to answer your questions to best help you.

this might help you understand
https://www.hemmings.com/magazine/h...th-Satellite-Road-Runner-and-GTX/3695011.html
it comes down to model designation and production numbers , the roadrunner and GTX were "performance models" they came with HD suspension etc standard as part of the "package" a Sebring or Sebring plus was a luxury car with a comfort options "package" . look at the bottom of the article all production numbers are there in black and white
its like comparing a greyhound with a whippet they have the same DNA but are not the same dog

Lastly I am not in this purely for the investment. I'm looking for a fun toy. But before I spend upward of $40k for a rotisserie restored Sebring it would be good to know that I have not just spent 2X what it is worth. Surely this has to be wrong that a top of the market Sebring is only worth $20K while the twin is worth $60K. That makes no sense at all to me.

The first thing you need to do is quit referring to these bogus value guides. The NADA is a dealers organization, and everything they put out is written to favor dealers. If they can sucker someone into paying $60k for a car from a dealer that they could buy for $15k from a non-dealer... well, now you know why NADA, Kelly, and the rest of them go to the time and expense to make these guides.

As has been mentioned, the market is collapsing as more and more boomers die off. The interest in our cars from investors over the past 30 years has kept far many more on the road that would normally be the case, so the market is going to keep getting worse, or better depending on your point of view, moving forwards. On top of that, as the market shrinks, the "hot" cars are shrinking too. 1971-1972 cars technically fall into what is traditionally considered the hay days of muscle cars, but the 1968-1970 cars are pulling the big money. With the exception of the top shelf models, Hemi and 440-6 cars, or high end restomods, there's not a big market for anything newer than 1970.

I've been seeing a lot of 71-72 Sebrings in great condition in the $8K to $10K range, and Roadrunners in the $10K to $15K range. And these are high-end drivers, not projects. Projects are usually $5K or less.

68GTXNH you are funny. I did do a bit of an intro post. Didn't realize anyone would expect such in each section! Or a bio ;-)

To put you at ease let me answer a few questions.

1) I am 40. Not 15

2) I actually AM all over the place. And rather enjoying it ;-). This will be my 1st classic muscle car and have no marriage to a certain model. I like several. But I notice I tend to lean toward Mopar. Which I also posted.

3) I said SSP as a direct follow up to the previous post that referred to SSP. I did not think the Sebring I was looking at was a Plus as it's not on the ad. Was just fast typing.

4) I DID go see that 69 Superbee. With my wife as well! Ease up on the ridiculous price part. It was not a terrible car. It what it was for a 4spd 440 car at $33k. Decent but needed more sorting than I feel like doing. And the engine felt weak. So I passed.

5) I then fell in love with what was apparenrly a 68 Charger R/T tribute car. Gorgeous inside and out. Straight in all senses. Drove VERY good. We initially thought it was a real R/T because it had badges and was optioned with the R/T heavy duty suspension. We just didn't know why someone would cheap out and put a 360 (albeit very well built/sounding one). After running VIN I learned it was originally a 318 car. Later the owner must have upgraded to 360 as the stock tranny won't bolt to a big block. This spooked me so I almost backed out of the deal. Which is when I found the Sebring. After confirming it is too much for a non RR car I'm prob going through with Charger. I want high HP, much improved suspension and different wheels anyhow which will make it a restomod. Thus the original motor will be a non-issue. The Charger, which we both otherwise LOVED will be an awesome base to start.

6) I'm impressed if many of you have 500hp cars you built in turbine garage over weekend. I'm on the other end of spectrum. I thought I wanted to be a mechanic as a child. But hitting my knuckles one too many times in my uncles garage in the bitter Chicago cold changed that real quick haha. That said if someone were local and wanted to do it with me for fun and "appreciation" gifts I wouldn't mind learning ;-)

7) Lastly, your spidy senses for trolls are way off. Trolls don't usually make posts in different sections trying to really make a decision! All in fun boys. Here are some Lambo pics btw.

the problem is just that there are toooooo many trolls so who really knows whats going on. im all over the place too, if you read my post in the "what other projects do you have going on" you can see that. i really just wanted to see a pic of your lambo, lol

I'm sure. Hopefully soon I will have some pics of a Mopar beast flacking the Italian beauty!

I think I'm going for it. It is crazy clean and well sorted. Should complete the deal today, then it has to be shipped. Will probably be a week until it arrives.

Then congrats and welcome to Mopar.

I was going to chime in, but you've heard enough opinions already. It comes down to what YOU enjoy. What POs the long-timers is the word "investing". It impacts the pricing for the die-hard.

BTW, I now have a '73 SSP that I'm going to sort out the way I want it. Enjoy the Charger; I had a '70 R/T SE. That style is classic.

That's why those dealer and insurance company guides make me laugh.

Try this one-

It's still a big difference that I don't necessarily agree with, but it's a lot more realistic than NADA or Haggerty.

...yeah no one want's those 1920's and 30's era Auburns or Duesenbergs any more...can't hardly give them away since their market got old and gray.

...and who hasn't turned down a $500 57 bel air in the last few years, huh?
