Wax and Grease Remover

Hello all,

I will be doing some painting soon and have a question about wax/grease remover. I have a gallon of Kustom Shop KW901, but my understanding is that this stuff is not to be used over filler or primer. Apparently it is pretty aggressive. I have heard that it is best to use something water based once there is filler/primer on the car.

I would appreciate any tips on what is commonly used for this purpose; thanks.

I'm not sure about the fluid you mention, but my painter told me that you dampen the rags with the degreaser/wax remover, then wipe over the area....immediately followed by another clean dry cloth. use tack rags/cloth after that. Kind of like the Karate Kid - Wipe on, wipe off.
Never just douse the panels in liquid for it to soak into any surface. :thumbsup:

...oh, and to answer your question...should be fine using the method I described. Try a small area first to test it.

Back in the day . At the garage the body guy sworn to using diesel fuel.

Diesel fuel to clean the paint. ? Diesel fuel will strip off any wax and it will clean tar from your car. Then a good washing....

I pulled up a safety data sheet on KW901 and it looks to contain Naptha & rubbing alcohol. That sounds like a good combination to me. It should remove most oil/grease/dirt & not attack either paint (catalyzed) or bondo + it evaporates quickly. Don't smoke around that stuff! It probably would remove air-dry lacquer (spray paint), but that's it.

I would tend to lean towards using a product like KW901 and not a water-based product. Water-based products are limited in what grease/oil they can dissolve & water evaporates very, very slowly compared to naptha/ipa meaning you'd have to wait several days, in my opinion, before you paint to make sure any bondo you have is dry.

I've always used something DX330 from PPG, I think that's what it was. Anyway, we sprayed that stuff everywhere all the time with no issues. It also make a good temporary clear coat to see your body work.

I use PPGs wax/ grease remover. I spray it on. You should never spray any liquid over bare putty work. Are you going to prime over your body work ? I use a lot of wax/grease remover before painting.
