air filter packing

I have a fixed triangle steel mesh air filter but no insert. There was foam padding shoved in it at one time. It looked like regular yellow foam padding. Any suggestions or type of foam pad I should put in there? I've seen ss wool in some, but I dont like the thought of decomposing metal hovering over my carb.

I had one of those on my truck and ditched soon after the foam started to disintegrate. It will eventually fall apart and get sucked down into the engine. Toss that Edelbrock nightmare and buy a proper air cleaner setup with paper or K&N type filter media.

Oh yeah, and if you have any backfires there is a potential for the filter foam to go up in flames.

kiwi is probably right, but I've run one of those air cleaner before "drop base" air cleaners were available & I had a SUPER tight hood clearance issue. The foam will melt if you have a backfire. It is an Edelbrock air cleaner & you can buy replacement foam online or at some part stores that sell them. I'm thinking O'Reilly

Check engine masters air cleaner test. Those things Destroy horsepower!

Thanks for the reply, that is the beast! I'll see if edelbrock suggests a better way than the foam of yesteryear. Or maybe I'll get the diameter and find something close to fitting.

Get rid of that little piece of crap asap. Best application is a larger diameter air filter, the air distribution from it is a smoother flow of air into the carb.

LOOSE THE FOAM FOR SURE, BEEN THERE DONE THAT ! I bought a triangle k-n filter for mine , worked well !
