I just got this Sunday. it had a new Brake Booster....but....I have to push VERY hard to get her to stop.... and the pedal goes way down while exercising my leg. oh. 1962 Plymouth Fury 318 727. I will appreciate any HELP before I take her out. drove around the block or so, and that dumb dirtyword pedal is not doing the job (or the booster). brakes were recently done all around (not by me) suggestions? stay safe. thanks

is there a vacuum port on the booster? Did you check the fluid? I would bleed a line and see if the pedal starts to get hard. Were the brakes good before you started playing with it? need more info

Pushing very hard on pedal means.....booster bad, booster check valve bad, booster hose not connected to vacuum, something in the brake pedal linkage is binding up OR the master cylinder is toast.

Having to push pedal down really far means.....air in brake lines, master cylinder is toast or brake push rod (pushes in booster & is connected to top of brake pedal linkage) is too short.

A hard pedal that slowly creeps down ... I would follow davek post above and let us know the results .... I would double check your vacuum source to the booster first ..

I forgot about the brake rod :BangHead:

I know nothing about this booster....except that it is new....I did not install it....and things "hectic" here today I have not checked the vacuum line, etc. the pedal goes down farther than it should before doing anything. as the brakes were totally done (again, before I got it) I will check those adjustment (brake) tomorrow. plenty of brake fluid (I did check that!). (maybe I just need six inches more on my leg!). I just got my shop manual, so will read it tonight. thanks. stay safe.

my shop manual say the master cyl push rod is NOT used, that there is one in the booster that is part of the booster. oh well, at 77 I need all the exercise I can get!! gonna lay down on the job tomorrow and check my brake adjustments on all 4 brakes. stay safe.thanks

The in the booster may have be adjustable rod may not be nearly touching piston.
Sounds a vac or booster problem.

Check to see if the booster is holding vacuum. If you have a hand type vacuum pump, disconnect the hose from engine vacuum source, hook pump up to the booster vacuum port at the check valve and pull up a vacuum. If you can't, or it won't hold a vacuum for a long time the booster has a problem.

gonna lay down on the job tomorrow and check my brake adjustments on all 4 brakes.

That would be a good place to start. If the shoes aren't adjusted up to where they need to be the pedal travel will be further than normal.

today will check vacuum as much as I can (no tools for that). brakes will lock up when I really (really) push hard. so, apparently all I have at this point in time is "manual brakes" and not "power".....but they are not good enough that I would feel safe driving around town. stay safe. thanks

I would suspect an improper rod length. How far do you have to push the pedal to get the brakes to begin to engage?

You didn't say whether the brakes were upgraded to front discs or if they are still drums. If discs were added, a single booster will not provide enough boost. quite often, people make changes without knowing what will work in different applications. Since you said you just got it, might be the reason why the car went up for sale to start with. You could have a bunch of parts that won't work together.

By the way, Welcome to FBBO. We are here to help

I have Drums. Just checked and I do have Vacuum to the dirtyword Booster. Pedal moves downward about 1 1/2 to 2 in before engaged. stay safe. thanks

wow. just re-adjusted drums... amazing how many times I have done that, but still forget which way the dirtyword brake tool moves to adjust/tighten up !! Fronts needed more than rears.....but.... test drive, just a little (little) better, still no power brakes. making me think of some dirtywords…… underneath this booger-bear is SOLID. new mags/wheels. stay safe. thanks

that "new" booster might be good or bad, or years old, as it was on the car when I got it, with the "old" booster in the Trunk. so. guess I might as well plan on buying another "new booster" and drive safely. anyone have suggestions on where/who I can buy from??? stay safe. thanks

so.... have ordered a new brake booster. now gotta figure out how to put it on... hee hee.
under the dash and over the firewall I goes...… stay safe
thanks

may the force be with you. You made sure your lines were bled right?
