I have an 11" flywheel (143 teeth) and the oem starter gear teeth are too big for the ring gear teeth and grinds and hangs up. Anyone run into this before?

What starter? What bellhousing? (or do you have an automatic?)

At least with manual transmissions, there are 11" bellhousings, 10-1/2" bellhousings & some aftermarket ones that can accept either a 11" or 10-1/2" flywheels. I'm not positive, but I "suspect" and 11" flywheel would physically bolt up into a 10-1/2" bellhousing, but the starter wouldn't have enough room to engage the ring gear on the flywheel.

11" flywheel (143 teeth) with oem starter, Keisler alum. bell made for 10 1/2" or 11" clutch (both). teeth engage halfway into ring gear but grind and hang up on ring gear. 4spd OD.

It only takes a few thou to have the gear hang on
Try another starter and if the same
you may have to carefully file opening in bell housing and elongate mounting hole
a little at a time to move starter away from ring gear

GM had shims to correct this

That's' what I'm looking at doing next. Moved the starter out a bit by opening its mounting holes but will probably need more before it is reliable. Thanx, Dave

Did you index your bearing retainer hole in bellhousing?

Post 6 if you haven't as yet.
Also, Does the Keisler bell have a pilot for the starter nose?
