My 727 is obviously leaking at the tail shaft. Is this an easy fix or indicative of something worse?

A leaky seal. My charger had the same thing. Now the front torque convertor shaft needs replacing.

Yup...new seal and maybe a new slip yoke if it's grooved or pitted.

Worse case scenario would be a worn tail shaft bushing. Try to move the yoke up and down to see if there is any play in it. Minimum play is ok, a lot of play requires replacing the bushing. Check this before removing the drive shaft. If ok, do what was mentioned in above post.

Good luck!

Looks like the driveshaft is too long. It’s touching the boot right now. Should be back about an inch. Shouldn’t it?

But the actual seal that keeps the ATF inside is near the end of the aluminum housing, that’s just a dust boot.

Yeah, yoke looks like it touching the seal. That’ll make it leak too.

Man, I need to open my eyes with this stuff!! Good call.

If rear suspension is hanging, jack rear differential so it's almost off jackstands and take another picture. Driveshaft yoke is deepest into trans with rear hanging,

Sorry, man...You have it backwards. The yoke plunges in and out but is in furthest as the suspension is compressed, not extended.

You need to check it on the ground, or the suspension fully loaded. It needs to be no closer than 3/4" from bottoming out. Touching the dust cover doesn't really matter.

I'll check it out the next few days, I hope. Have my car in the air so it's picture then jack, picture.

Transmissions scare me lol, how big of a job is it to replace that seal? My plan is to find a local shop to give it a once over/service.

Exactly.... Possible seal, another thing I've seen is the plug in the end of the yoke can pop out & it'll leak through the splines....

No big deal. If you have to, the entire tail shaft can be removed with the trans in the car.
Most likely just the output shaft seal, and the driveshaft yoke might be grooved.
With the tail shaft removed, it is easy to replace the rear bushing, and check the output shaft support bearing.

The seal is easy peasy. I would put the rear tires on stands ( keeps trans fluid from running out the tailshaft.) Unbolt the rear u joint and drop the driveshaft. Pull old seal. Replace with standard seal (no extended rubber).

Why would you choose to use a lower quality seal?

The picture I posted is a NAPA seal with a short rubber dirt seal. It's less than half the length of mopar dirt seal and keeps dirt away from trans fluid seal.

To op note length of dirt seal short.

To @Kern Dog. The driveshaft goes further into trans when rear end is hanging. First picture weight on suspension second rear hanging. Note stain on yoke, where it moves. It doesn't move much, 3/8".View attachment 906105 View attachment 906106

Mine is further in. I know my car was originally a 318/904 but now has a 360/727...Are 727 driveshafts shorter than 904s?
