Hello,

currently redoing the rear brakes on my '66 satellite vert and noticed that the factory setup didnt have self adjusters. My question is, can I add them when I put all of the new stuff on?

I think so. I removed the self adjusters on mine. Sorry I tossed them if others would prefer them. If I recall, tricky thing may be the shoes having the correct holes for the pins to mount the cable brackets.

Yeah, you can add them but you'll need the 'fine' notches on the adjusters instead of the course ones. The course ones have 12 notches and the fine ones have many more....and I'm also one that gets rid of the self adjusters. If you are one that doesn't nail the brakes after backing up, you'll be fine with the selfies but otherwise, you won't be. My now X was terrible on rear brakes as she would hit 300 mph backing out of our 100' long drive and come to a complete stop before looking both ways and I got tired of replacing the shoes every 20k miles so.....took em off but also took them off of most of the cars that saw the drag strip and hers never did.

does this look about right:

Looks right to me. Make sure you have the right adjuster on the right side. When you look at the threaded half you'll see a "R" for right side, "L" for left side.

I can't see the adjuster spring behind the axle flange. I see the adjuster plate bottomed on the shoe. It might come up when the adjuster is lengthened. You don't want this spring to be too long. Check this.

This is a front brake but it's the same adjuster setup that you have.

yes, the spring is plenty far from hitting anything...the shoes are just your run of the mill raybestos pads

....I just want to note how immaculate that pic is....should help lots of folks wanting to get the drums back together straight. (like me of course....hehe)

None are just run of the mill now days. I returned several sets trying to get good ones. That's the Brakes!
What was the problem with the ones you had to return? Been a few years since messing with drum brakes....can't believe 'she' has been gone for 3 years now so it'll be even longer before I'll have to work on brakes again lol

Even back in the day some consider we got good parts occasionally brakes did not contact the drums well. If that is the case the shoes can arched to fit at any good brake shop.

Miss matched sets mainly. You would find three rear shoes and one front in the same box. Had one with damage (cracks)

Then you get the different style hole for the later E-brake lever. It was always hard to get the early one with the pin to fit just right even though they thought they had designed a "fits all" hole. The bad thing is with the one hardware setup you need a round hole for the spring to hook in there right.

That's why I was curious where the OP found his. They look really good.

I have the ones still on the car from 1979....second or third set probably.....but still in very good shape
