New car to me so please bear with me. The shaft moves in and out about a 3/4”. Any ideas what the issue is? Just want to know what parts I need to order before I move ahead. I added a video(I hope). Thanks

.

There's a bearing under your steering wheel and turn signal switch that has a "C" clip on both sides to keep it in place. You might want to check this.

The inner shaft is two pieces and are held solidly together with injected nylon and they are easily broken when hit on while removing the column or gearbox and would allow the the shaft to move like that. It’s a collapsible design for crash impacts check what Khryslerkid recommended as well.

It's hard to tell what you are pulling on to show the movement. Are you pulling on the steering wheel or the shaft in the engine compartment?

Is it normal on a 1970 RR for the inner shaft to move up and down in tube slightly??

I’m just pulling up on the shaft itself, but it will also move when pulling up on the steering wheel. Thanks.

In that case check what Khryslerkid said. There should be no in and out movement of the upper shaft at the steering wheel.

This what your talking about?

#11 would be the clip in question. That's the "C" clip that would keep the steering shaft from moving upward.

You'll need to loosen the coupler at the steering box in order for the shaft to be pulled up through the column.

Next you"ll need to pull the steering wheel. Then under the steering wheel you'll find the turn signal switch. This needs to be removed but you will need to find the wire connector halfway down the steering column. Unplug this and you might have enough slack in the wires to get the turn signal switch up and over the end of the shaft. If you don't you'll have to unplug each of the wires that go into the plug.

With the turn signal switch removed you'll find a plate with three screws that holds the bearing in place. After removing this plate you can pull up on the shaft and the bearing should come up with it. If the #11 "C" clip is broke or just not in the groove it supposed to be in, the bearing may not come out with the shaft.

This is more than likely what you'll find under the retaining plate with the three screws. This clip keeps the shaft from moving downward.

This is the shaft with the #11 C clip still on it. Also the bearing which is surrounded by a rubber isolator.

What I'm showing you might be very genetic as it's a earlier version of the setup. More research is needed to do your year and model. You have the FSM so read it step by step to do it correctly. I'm not sure with the key lock set up on yours if you can even pull the shaft up enough though the column to inspect/replace the clip without removing other parts first.

You might only need to remove the "cup" that contains the key switch off of the column itself and not remove the shaft?

Thanks Khryslerkid for the detailed instructions. After looking at my coupler, I think I’ll order the parts for a complete column rebuild. Then it’s done.

Speaking of rebuild. What parts do I need?

bearing is part# 2265656 and still dealer available I think. what about the snap ring and circlip? Anyone know the part# or a source? I can get the coupler rebuild kit. Anything else I need? Thanks and sorry if these are newbie questions.

Must be new, can't believe they'd cut off our supply. I've bought numerous things from DMT, most via their ebay sales under Loretta's name. Email them, I would hope they'll still ship to Canada.

Looks like we have to order through their Canadian distributor now. National Moparts

That's fair enough, Nigel (National Moparts) is good to work with but of course it adds wait time if he doesn't have it stocked. Did you actually talk to them or email them? As I noted I have bought lots of stuff from Lorettafillmore on Ebay and it's been mailed out without issue. Maybe she's using the Global system now where it goes to Pitney Bowes to be forwarded to Canada.

I see them on eBay, but they only have 6 items posted. I sent them a message through their website but no response yet. I’ll try NationalMoparts. Just have to wait I guess.
