Lately I have noticed two diff ball & trunnion faces on 64 Sport Fury auto & 65 Satellite 4-speed cars. Can anyone tell me if auto and 4-speed are the reason?

The one on the right was in my 64 Sport Fury, console auto. The one on the left was provided with my newly built 727 auto. My original ball & trunnion face bolts up flush with no issues. Car is as smooth as it was with the original piece.

I pulled this pic of a ball & trunnion from a 65 Satellite 4-speed car over at Mopart's. You can see how the above piece on left would accept it. However both bolt up flush. Not sure if it's a 4 -speed, auto thing or what? I'm sure someone will chime in soon! Thanks!

I have found that the difference is the larger bolt pattern is if it was a big block, or a small block! As for the 4 speed the only ones I've had they had the large pattern! But then knowing mother mopar it wasn't set in stone! What ever was handy at the time!

The stud pattern is the same.

You can tell by the pic that my '64 Polara has the one with the indentations. This is the stock trans that was in this big block car from the factory and the stock ball and trunion unit.

Diameter of driveshaft maybe??
While I have not measured either one, 4-speed or auto I would say something to do with the abrupt loading and unloading of torque from a 4 -speed. Of course this is pure speculation. Someone will chime in soon with a positive take.

The parts book shows no difference based on transmissions. Check date codes if possible. It could be an early/late design change.

I believe you are correct..checked parts book as well. Thank you for the reply!
