Por 15

I've used POR-15 for years on rust. Have had real good results and has lasted for years. It does not stick to clean bare metal or paint. It also does not like sunlight. It does work great on clean rust. Clean as in no loose scales, flakes, dirt or grease. I use it on truck frames and suspensions. Also rear ends. Floors too. Just on the rusted areas. I had a swap cooler that had a badly rusted reservoir and used POR-15 on it thinking that it would last a couple years. 12 years later no rust through, bubbling or leaks.
Rust Mort is great for seams and such.

I actually use Tremclad Rustoleum. Works fine. You have to remove loose rust but this stuff penetrates fine. In fact, it needs a bit of rust to work properly. It doesn’t work well on bare, shiny steel.

I painted the whole floor pan, trunk pan, and underside of my charger in it. Love the stuff. I thought I was going to have to replace everything but it brought it back. It accepts paint and undercoating really well.

I'm a satisfied customer

I've been using it for years, if you follow the instruction it works great. It will not work on bare metal that is NOT rusty, must be rusty, use the metal prep also. For really hard to reach areas check out Eastwood's line of "Rust Encapsulators" they work pretty well also. I do like their silver extreme encapsulator a little more then Por-15 because i think it may hold up better in areas that have small spots or rust and clean metal mixed. Good luck with it.Also check out their internal frame coating ( may just be encapsulator in a different can/ spray tip, i used that inside of frames, body channels and behind fender braces ,everywhere i could get.

I've used it once and it peeled right off.

My choice is Rust Bullet. It is idiot proof and is stuck like glue to frame rails and trunk area. Clean, unclean, brushed, not brushed...it is on there good.

Anyone use rust mort by sem? I’m getting ready to treat some frame rails on my truck with it.
I've used rust mort and found it to be a very good product. Will etch concrete floor and irritate skin, so use caution.

Agree with threewood. The silver Rust Bullet is by far a better product than POR.

Ive used it in areas that are very hard to get to, but on those floors I would sand and epoxy prime. I was also told that POR15 should not be put on clean sandblasted areas. I tried that with the same results as dla4567

Get some generic phosphoric acid apply and when rust turns black your good to go. Reapply and then do again. Then 2 coats imron 2 part or sherwin 2 part urathane

I contacted them when I had problems before and they told me sandblasted metal was the best surface for it because it gave it something to “bite to”.

if its sandblasted, there is no need for por15.......just use epoxy.........the stuff has a purpose, in certain situations, but it is basically crap

Time and again there is always the discussion {Can I paint over rust with this or that product ?}
All that crap does is make you feel like your doing something. OP says surface rust ??? ok I guess as long as you cant see grass or the concrete its just surface rust.

The only way to stop rust is to remove it.

POR 15, and just about every other rust inhibitor I've used require a few basic prep steps for the best results.....I often find that folks who do not mix these products adequately end up with issues....and also temperature. I've used POR 15 on my chassis, bumper brackets and wheel backer plates on every car I've owned. Never has an issues with any of them when applying correctly. The stuff they have today is superior in many ways than then 60's / 70's stuff ...but needs attention when mixing. I stir my POR 15 with a standard paint stick to get all the solids off the bottom of the can,,,,,it would shock you to see how that stuff can separate....same with Rust-O-Lem. Shake the rattle can upside-down...2 min minimum. Test patch.....then have at it.

Guy at local paint store said he sells a ton of this and it works really well. Said he has used with great results.
