Major James Howard had one of the more interesting victory totals. Before the war, he flew Navy dive-bombers from carriers Lexington, Wasp, and Enterprise. He resigned his Naval commission to join the American Volunteer Group in China, the “Flying Tigers.” He destroyed 6 Japanese aircraft with the AVG. He accepted a commission as a major in the USAAF after the AVG disbanded in 1942. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions on January 11, 1944. This photo was likely staged to commemorate that award and to show off his unique “scoreboard.

An experiment at getting a higher speed seaplane, the Blackburn B-20 featured both a retractable hull to reduce air resistance, and was powered by Rolls-Royce X-24 Vulture engines, having four banks of six cylinders in an X configuration (note the exhaust). Capable of over 300 mph. the aircraft didn't survive long, crashing on an early test flight.

The fate of the Vulture engines wasn't great either, with many problems causing production to halt in 1942 after fewer than 600 were built.
 
I used to like aircraft and aviation. Been an A&P for 8 years, working jobs in it that I haven’t really liked has made it lose a lot of its magic unfortunately.
