Most of the tools we use to bore holes in metal are sharp — they carve unwanted material out. There are times you don’t want to waste that material or can’t have metal shavings and sparks all over the place. That’s when friction comes into play. This GIF shows a friction drill going through metal like a hot knife through butter. Well, it’s actually going through like a hot drill, but that’s beside the point. A friction drill is usually made of a hard ceramic with a melting temperature higher than the metal it’s used on. By spinning incredibly fast, it generates enough heat through friction to push right through the metal.
