Aftermarket Fuel Injection, Go or No Go??

I have been seeing lots of "used" fuel injection systems for sale on the net. Wondering why.
Have you used an aftermarket unit, and how did you like it.

Uh oh. Most are electronic carbs. Sequential Port or no-go.
 
Everything has its pros & cons. There are days I want to throw my EFI in the trash can, and others where it's the best thing since sliced bread to me. It's all personal preference. The ones that you see for sale could be for a multitude of reasons.
 
Thought I wanted EFI until I read the posts of car dying and had to be towed for big money.
Not easy to troubleshoot when you are " Found On Road Dead" and don't know WTF went wrong.
Until they get their **** together, it's a carburetor for me & my "X".
 
The Holley n Fitech TBI are great units "If" their ECU's are working correctly. Both have their ECU inside the throttle body. They get a lot of heat. Some have great luck and others not. I've had to replace 1 ECU on my Fitech. Yes, TBI is an electronic carb, but it lets you start easy in the cold, does it's own adjustments once parameters are set etc. But there is about another grand in supporting hardware needed. It can be less, but I like to round high and be pleasantly surprised if it's lower. Many are for sale used as the owner did not install correctly and blamed the unit. Engine had issues such as exhaust leaks, vacuum leaks, low voltage and the EFI would not work properly. Port injection is better on a naturally aspirated engine, it controls fuel to each individual cylinder. That said only RB intakes have aftermarket port injection manifolds. B block manifolds need to be sent to a custom machinist who can mill and install injector bungs in them, not cheap at all. If your engine has any problems, FI will magnify it and not work properly. A carb doesn't care if you have an exhaust leak or slightly low voltage.
 
Old news, but Pro Flo 4 has figured it out. Drop it right on. It’s everything behind the firewall that causes grief. And, the computer has been unaffected by heat on the firewall. Believe me I tried.

Unfortunately they don't, nor does any aftermarket company, make it for a B block. Intake has to be customized.
 
Guess I’m confused.
 
I suggest finding a class on fuel injection before buying one. It may help with figuring out any issues. I took an 8 hour class back in the '80's before the aftermarket electronic systems got popular. OEM systems were getting common. Gave me a lot of insight into what was involved and different than carbs. The new systems seem to have a lot more on board diagnostics. Good luck.

I have the Terminator HP, starts up great on the first crank. So far thats about it, Im not a tuner but understand PID loops frim my days of controls and thought it would somewhat translate over..not really.
I studied, read a lot of articles and thought I had a decent working knowledge but I end up with more questions than answers at the end of the day....but Im not a quitter so Im going to keep fighting until i get it or i burn it down.
