Updating the Super Street Mopar

Looks like my spacer is going to work, just need to true up the roundness of it. A woodworking neighbor is going to see if he can chuck up a piece of 6x6 that I have, on my cribbing cart, and get it spun down to 5" with his wood lathe. I marked and cut a piece of cardboard for the filter base. I measured out 18", 14" and 11", then cut it out. The 18 will give the 14" element 2" of air space around the outer area, 11" for the center opening will give me enough room for the element thickness and I'll be able to make a bead just inside to keep it in place. I set it over the TB and it looks like I was correct on offsetting it to the rear. I set the cable bracket in place, needed to bend a little more so it cleared the fuel rail, plus notch out the inner manifold bolt hole so it can slip under the bolt. Tried to get the bolt in without the cut but won't go. The bolts Indy used are 1" long which doesn't give enough thread engagement, to me with them threading into aluminum, so I'll get 1.25" later on. Tried a regular 1.25" bolt and the hole is deep enough. Plus if I go 6pt as opposed to the current 12pt, I can get a wrench on the inner bolts. Not enough room for a box end wrench even if it grind it down some. Open end will be fine. I dug out my old throttle cable to get all of the players in the mix and put it in place. I'll keep putzing with it some more but I think I'll have a workable unit. After I cut some material for the base and get it set in place, I'll set the spacer on and then start filling in the opening between the base and spacer.

After lunch I went through my aluminum stash. I have some .062 but not enough to do the base in one piece. Have plenty of .042 and thinner so .042 it was. Got the initial cuts done then went around with the hand shears for truing it up. Hit the edges with a body hammer to flatten them down then with a file to remove snags etc. I think I'll put a bead just outside of the 14" mark to help stiffen it up. I need to do some mods on the cable mount to sink it down some to lessen the lump in the material that will go above it.

Damn...

You're at the same point I have been for about 5 years where you literally have to make everything custom...

Keep at it you'll get there...

For sure! One for the drag strip and one for track events/auto x.

After working on the wagon, I got a little done for the air cleaner. Put the base into the English Wheel and did some stretching of the area I intended to put a bead in. This is to help stiffen the base up and help locate the filter element. Should have stretched it a little more but it will still work. After that I trimmed down the accelerator cable clamp bracket. Took about 3/4" out of it. Welded it back together, now that part is groovy. More fun stuff tomorrow.

Over the last couple of days I've made some progress on the unit. I decided to trim the TB arm down some so it would have more clearance below the base. Checked the fit then prepped up some .042 to make a ring around the spacer. Off of this ring will be the pieces cut/welded in to fill between the TB and the filter base. Once it looked like the ring was a go, I ran it through the English Wheel for some stretching prior to me running it through the bead roller. Wanted to stiffen it up some. After that it got welded to the spaced. I spent some time straightening out the ring after it looked like a potato chip from the welding, all good now.

I have never seen those bars on the outside of the inner fenders like that.. very cool for side to side stiffening... And thanks for not cutting the inners out! that makes my heart hurt :)

More shots. Before I wrapped up yesterday, I made a pattern for the first fill piece, got it cut/trimmed/filed. Today or the next, I'll continue. Later on today one of my Saturday C&C friends is coming by to check stuff out on the car plus give me an assist hand running some long skinny pieces through the bead roller. I'm going to make some 1/4 round material to use on the base and lid for the vertical side to weld too. Get some smoothness there instead of just clunky 90* corners.

I was initially going to buy the units from USCT but didn't like the $200 price. Tried making my own but couldn't quite get it right so I took a look at the ones produced for later b's by the defunct company out of Canada[ name slips my mind] and went that route. Have about $40 into it, mostly to pay for bending the tubes.

That car is gonna be super stiff... think you will have it on the track this year?

Not unless we get blessed with finances. What you've been seeing me working with is parts/supplies/materials I've had for 10+ years. Here and there I'll but some welding gas, filler rod, small inexpensive stuff. I'm waiting for a friend to buy one of my Roscoes. If that happens, I'll have some dough for the car to purchase more stuff and update my two welders. The old welders will get sold and I'll add that to the pool too. Currently I'm on the low end of SS, wife works part time so money is tight and our retirement funds are getting sucked down to minimals. The garage build saga still isn't done after 4 years, "maybe" in April. Still shelling out dough for legal fees, even mistakes. Thats an industry that needs to operate like automotive repair. You don't fix my problem, you don't get paid. If we succeed like we have been so far, the contractor is most likely going to declare bankruptcy and we'll get nothing. If we do get paid, it's only about 70% of what we've shelled out in legal fees and doesn't include what we shelled out to finish the project. It's all in The Good Lords Hands. Let Go, Let God.

Jesus man.... well i hope it works out..

And BTW.. Roscoes as in the painter? and more than 1? holy cow...

For sure plus having something good for 600+ yards is wasted on me when I can't hold still. I quake too much. Closer in I'm fine.

I have a old *** (from the 70s) Ruger 10-22... it kills ground hogs perfectly and is super accurate to this day... all i need :)

I cut a piece of material to test out a die combination for the bead roller to give me a nice 1/4 round strip. Looks like it will work. After that I was working on the front filler piece and thought it might work better if I stretched the lower edge where it meets the base. Ran it through the wheel a few times and it made a difference. If my friend come by tomorrow, couldn't swing it today as he's recovering from human version of cylinder head work[ valves replaced, port n polish etc] and slept, I'll have an extra hand for welding a long with running strips through the roller. I cut some extruded aluminum material I got from the hardware store, going to make a hold down bridge to the TB that will get welded to the TB spacer. After that, filed down welds from putting the ring and spacer together. There will be a few weld touch ups there tomorrow too, have arrows pointing where to weld.
