Some Dick Landy stuff....

dick landy.jpg

NHRA World Finals, Tulsa. 1968 I believe.

When I was a kid…a long time ago…the first race car I ever saw was from Dick Landy. Might be the coronet in post #3. It was at a speed shop in Buffalo NY called Jan-Cen I think. It was parked out front on display for something.

Had read Landy was a fan of the pushbutton TF having had a set from his ’64 racer installed in his ’65 when mopar ended the button shift. From the photo (post #3) looks like this could be one of those in his ’65 Dodge. Viewing photos of one his ‘64’s, seemed as though he had them mounted on the right side if I recall.

I remember his Charger here in the area back then also, maybe at the Buffalo Autorama ? Jan-Cen is still here too, another shop it may have visited was Gor-Den Automotive ? "Blast" from the "Past" !!!

I remember seeing a non altered wheel base version of the 65 car, that someone tried to pass off as his original 65 car.

Several, the ‘67 is in the Mosely collection 5 miles from me.
I remember seeing an ad with him selling some of the 67 and 68 cars. I also remember seeing an ad for his street driven 70 Challenger R/T being posted for sale in the back of Hot Rod magazine.

Dick said, this young kid named Steve walked into my shop and said to me,I want you to take my Challenger and build the chassis exactly like your Pro Stock Challenger.

That's the Steve Lisk Challenger, with a tunnel ram Hemi and Lenco 4 speed. He raced the Sudden Death Mustang ll built by Jack Roush and won 2 out of 3 times, I think. Both 9 second street cars. I think Mike Fons was also involved with the build. Steve Lisk's father owned a trucking company, so Steve had the funds to build the car.

Dick built the chassis,Mike sorted the car out and made it perform correctly. I guess you could say Mike essentially tore the car down to the chassis.

I've never heard of Landy's involment with the Lisk car, from a logistics point, that doesn't even make since when the Motown(thanks Berry Gordy)/Mopar Missile, Rod Shop Challenger are your neighbors.
Mike Fons and his brother Kenny are mostly credited for the car.
