Well today was alignment day for the roadrunner. After getting all new ball joint, tie rods, control arms and bushings for the roadrunner I took it out for a front end alignment to a very trusted place that have aligned many cars for my family. I got it done and it drove the best it’s ever drove everything was good and drive home was just fine. I parked it in the garage and walked away and about an hour later my sister smelled smoke and she opened the door to the garage and sure enough smoke was everywhere and so she ran and got me and I saw fire from underneath the car. My dad and brother came out and got the car In neutral and shoved it out into the driveway and hosed it down. I’m still in shock. Before anyone asks me, no I don’t know what caused the fire. I’m pretty sure it’s electrical because we hosed down what was left of the wiring harness and it was hissing really loud. It’s still the original wiring. Not sure what I’m going to do except call the insurance company and have them assess the damage, they’re more than likely going to total it. It’s really not all that bad. If I where to rebuild it I would need a new interior, wiring, check brake and fuel lines, check all the rubber and I’m probably going to have to pull the motor and check it out and do all of the other little odds and ends. Any other things I should look for or inspect or do before the inspection for the insurance company?

sorry to see/hear that. Glad you’re ok and you caught it in time before it caused real damage.

I can somewhat feel your pain. I had something similar happen to my charger in 2000.
Burned the engine harness and about a foot inside the firewall. It was my own fault.

Yours looks serious and the acid fumes etch anything chrome or stainless.

Hopefully you can save it.

Really sorry that happened. You were lucky to catch it in time and get it moved outside to save the garage. Luckily nobody was hurt.

Yeah it definitely could have been worse. If nobody was home we would have lost out whom house and about three other cars so I’m just thanking the good lord it only go as bad as it did. I’m going to try and save it.

This is a thought that's always in the back of my mind. Hopefully damage was limited to just the car and your structure is okay.

Let us know how the insurance company treats you.

Water under the bridge now, but I have battery disconnect on every old car in the garage. I'm also in the habit of babysitting the car when I bring it home for a few minutes just to make sure gas and fluids are not leaking.

Consider working with your insurance company to save the car. Perhaps work with a shop to restore the car even if you need to add funds. At least you know what you have.

Those are good precautions, I’m sure my paranoia will get me into those habits if or when I get it fixed.

So sad. If you decide to to repair the damage be sure to mention this story while looking for the parts. Guarantee you most folks here will donate what they have to help a brother out. I know I will.

That's a shame, hopefully you can save the car. Would have been much worse if it went undetected. 440'

Sad to hear, but it could have been a disaster. Agreed value insurance?

My recommendation is to either total the car and get a check and walk away, or work with the insurance company and get it restored. Don't rush to salvage title status so fast.

Friend of mine bought his car back from the insurance company after a major accident and that seemed to be a headache for future insurance coverage after he restored the car.

Don't make a decision fast. Take your time.

Sorry to hear/see this. Good news is that it limited to your car, and house was not involved. Now you will find out how good your insurance company is.

VERY sorry to see anyone go through that.
There but for the Grace of the Mopar Gods go I!

Make sure the insurance company gets everything they need before you do anything.
Once they're satisfied, there's only one thing to do:
a. rip out what's beyond saving
b. clean up what's left over
c. start putting her back together again

You can do this. The car deserves the efforts - and you'll have a hell of a story to tell
once she's back in operation.

Keep in mind if the insurance company wants to total the car you should negotiate a price and walk away. If the insurance company is open to restoration you will have to put up some money as there will be debates over responsibility for damages versus "repair" during the restoration.

Okay, Good to know.

Damn, Paul. That's terrible. It might look shitty but it looks like it can be saved.
