Floating on magnetic levitation instead of rolling on wheels makes the ride smoother and cuts down on maintenance. Not merely an experiment, it has been in revenue service since 2003.

A newer train being built for the Shandong province will have twice that speed, zipping from Beijing to Shanghai in 2 ½ hours, a 700 mile distance.

Talked my way into the cab of a LI bound train out of Manhattan.
Had a lovely discussion with the conductor (looked to be about 1/2 my age!) recanting 50 year old tales of sneaking under the Bronx Metro North stations placing and retrieving coins on the tracks! We were express to Jamaica station and she was all tightened up until then. I believe she enjoyed our talk, I know I did. I took my leave with a thank-you and informed she made this old man's day!
