I replaced my original fuel pump with a Carter on my 1965 361ci Dodge because it was leaking fuel into my crankcase. Both old/new pumps looked identical. The car runs just fine but after a ride today (maybe 50 miles since the replacement) I noticed a weak ticking from the pump at idle when I opened the hood. Do I need to be concerned? Thank you!

I noticed the same thing with a new Carter mechanical pump. I don't like it. Never had this happen before. Don't want to hear this noise

My carburetor couldn't tolerate the high output pressure of the chinesium Carter fuel pump ordered per the Rock Auto catalog. My 67 440 with the 4327S Carter carb wants no more than 5psi (per the service manual). I had a bad flooding issue with gas all over the intake. I rigged a regulator and gauge, set it for 4.5 psi and it all went away. 'Cept I didn't like all the claptrap under the hood so I bought an Edelbrock pump (made in the USA) spec'd for the engine. I don't recall the Carter ticking, I was too p.o.'d about the flooding. The ticking could be the internal check valve, or even just poor workmanship.

@67 WS23 what part number pump did you buy from rock auto

Rock auto sells
1967 440 Carter M3672 max press 5.5
1969 440 vin L Carter M4434 min press 6 max press 8
1970 440 vin U or V Carter M4845 minimum press 6.8

I have a M4434 on a stock 440 with an AVS works great, no noise. Bought in 2023.

Carter M3672. After installing it I read horror stories about certain Carter pumps made in China. The max pressure was more like 7psi. The 4327S AFB doesn't like more than 5 psi. I had installed new floats, new needles, new seats, new jets, new check, new accel pump, all adjusted per the 67 shop manual, but had massive flooding. I put a Malpassi adjustable regulator in line with the pump outlet along with a pressure gauge. With the Malpassi wide open the pressure was almost at 7psi. I adjusted down to 4.5psi and had no problem. All the pissing fuel issues went away. The Edelbrock unit is the 1723 made in USA and puts out 4.5 to 5psi. It costs more but is well worth it.

I suspect a small gap between the p'rod pump arm is causing the noise.

Carter/Edel carbs will quite easily tolerate 10psi of fuel pressure, but the float level must be reset....because fuel pressure changes the fuel level.

The 426 Max Wedge fuel pump was rated at 6-8 psi & the Carter AFB carbs used exactly the same n/seats & floats as other AFBs.
