727 won't go into park. B/U, neutral switch?

I finally got back to it. I dropped the trans pan and could see the rooster comb working fine and the light switch was not interfering at all. I watched it select all positions park to low. With the E brake on so the tires can't rotate it still makes the ratchet sound in park and stalls, it runs fine in the other gear selections. I'm a bit worried.
 
Assuming the park rod is installed in the correct location into the tail housing. And the components in the tail shaft housing are as well. Was the tail housing disasembled? if not? My next guess would be it has a 904 park rod attached to the valve body, not a 727.

If your engine stalls, there is something wrong with your torque converter. Maybe this is where the sound is coming from.
 
But,but he says he just changed the switch originally when problem started. Doug & Dave came up with answers, but they make no sense from the original problem. Also, torque conv really doesn’t care what the trans is doing right?
 
You should be able be able to put transmission in park or stop rear wheels without the engine stalling. That's what a torque converter is there for. That is why you can stop at a light or stop sign, and the engine still runs.
 
It could stall from a bad tune, or it could stall from the converter dragging it down.
 
I am guilty of speed reading post #21. If it's ratcheting and the wheels aren't turning? Then what is rotating? The converter, flexplate, and to some extent the input shaft though only by windage and friction. If it stalls in gear and is not engine tune related? Then the converter may be driving the input shaft by force, not fluid movement. The turbine in the converter shouldn't be being driven by mechanical force. I broke one that did this in my street car a few years ago. I am surprised if the converter is broke that the pan isn't filled with shrapnel.

My rule of thumb is: If you have have steel/ metal shrapnel in your pan, your torque converter is junk. It got there through the cooler lines. Most of the transmission is actually aluminum, so will not shed magnetic particles.
 
I think the stalling was coincidental, due to the engine being cold the first time I had this problem. This transmission was rebuilt by a transmission shop and the car has not been driven yet. The converter is a ~2k stall converter and I used a solid steel plate in place of the flex plate.
When I rotate the rear tire by hand in park, it makes the ratchet sound, but not in neutral. The trans operates in reverse, neutral and drive up on stands. It acts like it wants to engage the park lock but can't quite get there. I will drain the fluid to check for shrapnel.
