1962 Belvedere Transmission Issue

1962 Belvedere, 318 Poly, 727 push-button, original driveline rebuilt 10+ years ago including rear end with 741 3.23 w/ TruTrac diff.

In all forward drive gears, no issues. When I put it in reverse, I get reverse and it moves back without issue but I get a rumble/growl sound. Put it in D and it goes away.

Foot on brakes, car not moving, D no noise. R makes the grumbling noise.

Could this be external? Original trans rebuilt. Still has front and rear pump.
 
Possibly. I did re stake it when it was rebuilt. New springs and rollers as well.

I think it has been doing it for a while. Usually when I back out it is on gravel so I thought the noise was the rocks. But it isn't. I may be able to capture the noise on video so I will try this afternoon.
 
Park my be out of adustment. Try pulling the cable out a little to see if the noise goes away.
 
Yesterday, after the car was cold, started it and went from D to R a few times and no noise. After I got home and the car was warm, it would rattle/grumble in R. It almost sounds like the exhaust could be hitting. But wouldn't it also rattle in drive?

I need to get under it tomorrow to swap out the speedo gear, and I'll check the park cable. I'll also try to locate if the sound is in the case or somewhere else.
 
Fire it up, put it in reverse, and put the emergency brake on. Get out and see/hear if you have a pipe hitting something.
 
Is this happening with the car stationary? If so my bet is you have metal to metal contact in reverse. The engine/transmission rotate in a different direction forward to reverse. Exhaust system can be a prime suspect.

Yes, stationary.
 
Fixed! There were a few spots on the steering link that had rubs, so I got the trusty air hammer out.

Took it for a drive to warm her up. When I got back I was still getting a slight rumble that I could feel through the steering wheel. Got the hood up and looked some more.....and the header was hitting the steering box. A little more air hammer and no more noise. Thanks for the help!
