1967 8.75 741 axle retainers

Getting ready to replace the axle seals and wondering if anyone has seen this setup. PO has been working on it and the passenger side has some sort of castle style retainer and the drivers side looks original. looks like some sort t of upgrade but this is my first axle I haver attempted to open up. Any comments on if this is common or what's going on here LOL. thanks guys

If I’m not mistaken, that’s the adjustment and only on one side and should have a locking tang held in place with a bolt. Been a while but others will chime

What MW said. End play adjuster only on the passenger side. Do you have a service manual? If not go here and get a free one.
