Is it best to pull engine or can the oil pan be changed in the car. What steps are necessary for in car change?

When I changed mine I just took the engine mounts off and lifted the engine about 6 inches up and pulled it out towards the tranny. May have to take off the driveshaft. Didn't have mine at the time. Did it myself, fairly easy to do.

I have a 360 SB

I changed out an oil pan on a 74 P-code (400HP) way back when I was first tinkering with them. I did it with the engine in place but had to raise it up to clear the oil pickup. Not an easy task, but because of the level at which the oil pan sits below the K-member, needless to say one too many hits messed up the plug and drain area.

Depending on your situation, maybe doing a freshening up of the engine compartment, managing oil leaks or maybe even a valve job, cam or timing chain change out (?), pull it. More than likely you may be looking into doing a re-seal of the real main while you're at it. Just my thoughts.

Its "doable" ( I have done it ). Loose the engine mounts from K member and lift up the engine the most you can. Loose the steering center link from pitman and iddler arm ( or loosen those from K member/steering box )

need to loose the fan shroud too to prevent fan from hit it.

I have lifted up the engine using a jack on tranny

big block or small block? why are you changing it? I kind of have to agree with 73 Brogham if it was me and the engine has any real miles on it it may be a good time to pull it reseal and give it a fresh coat of paint or whatever it needs.
